Hi all. Just joined. I am looking for a mid to late 90's model Civic for my son. He will be going to college next fall. It is not far, only about 10-12 miles from home. Right now he has a 1970 Chevelle that he drives to high school and work. He needs something dependable, better gas mileage and we do not want him driving the chevelle to college. It is his first car and we want to keep it to fix up. I'm sure many here like myself wish they still had that first car. Anyway he likes the looks of the Civic around that year so that is what we are trying to find. I myself have an older Camaro that I have been working on for a few years and know the value of forums like this so I am trying to do a little homework first. Look forward to learning from you. Thanks, Pat

Re: New member

just be careful with auto transmission, weak point of the hondas, it seems.

Re: New member

The Camaro is a 77. I had a 74 way back when and got hooked on the body style. His 70 Chevelle is a 307 Malibu. Decent car but ready for a good retoration. I have also heard to stay away from the autos. What years denote 5th gen civics? I saw a 94. Didn't look too much different. If he had to drop a new motor in the car where would be a decent place to purchase a crate motor? Thanks

Re: New member

Welcome amigo! There's plenty of stuff over in the 6th gen area to look at to get you started. You should go get yourself a Haynes manual as well. Trust me, it'll come in handy

Re: New member

What I have seen here, looking at mid 90's to 01's, a little older and more miles = about $3500. A little newer and still more miles = $5000. Model doesn't seem to make much difference either. Have only seen one Si. A 99 for $4500.

Re: New member

Well we passed this one up. In hind sight I think we shouls have bought it. Was a nice little car. Minor issues were window falling off track when going up on driver side and hood release latch broke when my son pulled on it (that is just a supersticious thing I guess). Anyway, I think we are going to look for something a little less expensive. He doesn't have quite as much money as I thought he did and I want him to have more of an interest in the car. We have time so we will continue to look. One good thing is he decided he does definitely want a 5 speed from watching me drive the car. He said it looked like fun. I was having fun too. lol

Re: New member

Ok, got a line on a 01, 2 door, DX, 5 spd, 167k miles. Has had timing belt and water pump done. $3500. Couple of small dings. Lowered 2" I think he said. after market wheels, stereo etc. Have to drive about 150 miles to see, but looks ok in the pictures and the guy sounded ok on the phone. Selling because he has a company car and no longer needs. May be a few days before we can get down to look at this one.

Re: New member

Thanks guys. Fun little car to drive. Just have to teach my son how to drive a stick. I think he will enjoy it once he gets the hang of it. I need to get him to join here since it is his car.

Re: New member

even if he doesnt join, have him read up on some of the generation specific things about civics here, especially about maintenance.
There are a lot of archived manuals for just about everything. If he still has questions, feel free to ask
