Re: newb from Minnesota
welcome, all you really need is the new gasket and maybe some tools like a gasket scraper to get all the old stuff off. and a small socket wrench to loosen the manifold bolts. i think honda uses some sealant in a few places to make sure there are no leaks on the older models (grab some rtv silicone so you can duplicate honda's install). just make sure the two surfaces are totally clean and be careful not to scratch the metal while doing it. hondata heat shield gasket is the best you will find and helps keep the intake manifold cooler for more power. worth doing if you have to replace the gasket anyway. you may want to check the manual like even haynes should have a description on how to torque down the bolts to the head. there is an order and torque value that needs to be followed so it seals to the head. i havent done it on older civics, but i assume you start in the middle and work your way out to the sides. make sure to check tho and also you may lose some coolant in the process. idk how much will come out, it may be safer to just drain the coolant before you start. might be a good idea to relieve the fuel pressure too. make sure the new gasket holes all line up properly too. good luck!
