1989 Civic to 2002 Civic
New member with a 2002 Civic LX Coupe excited with purchase.
I Totalled my 1989 Civic LX Sedan a week ago. I bought it with 147,000 miles and drove it 75 miles a day to work in Dallas and back for 2 1/2 years as a commuter car only. It had 208,000 miles on her when she bit the dust and was going strong. 2 days later I sold my low mileage 2002 Z28 after extensive de-modification and I must say I miss the lil old ugly Honda much more than I miss the Camaro.
Without a car to get to work and back in I was somewhat rushed to get into another vehicle. The Camaro was sold so that I could get into a Z06 Corvette but with the 89 Civic totaled I first had to get another driver. Looked at several 96 to 98 Civic's in the 5K range but most had either high mileage or exterior wear and damage, etc. Frustrated over 5 days of shopping for a Civic and tired from a long day at work I decided to stop at a small Honda dealership South of Dallas as a last resort on the way home that night. From the intersection I was stopped at on the service road I could see a good looking black 2 door Civic coupe sitting alone under a lamp in the corner of the lot. Turns out it was a 5 speed and was Honda Certified with a 12/12000 mile bumper to bumper no deductible warranty. I had to have it. Looked bad *** and what an improvement inside and out from the 89 I just lost. I think I drove it thru town atleast 10 times over the New Year weekend because it's so much fun to drive. Now that I have had it 4 days I have had time to go through it top to bottom and have determined the following:
The shock's and possibly struts too are TOTALLY Shot. I have never in my life rode in a car that bounces over humps in the road like this one does and it's totally embarrassing too. It appears the warranty that came with the car infact states to cover shocks and struts. Will call tomorrow to confirm.
There is a definate and constant vibration rattle coming from the driver rear area. Sounds much like a golfball or pinball bouncing at a high frequency. I assume this could possibly be associated with the blown shocks back there, jeez.
and finally the stereo definately has no *****. That's an easy fix.
The suspension bolts/nuts show sign of removal and replacement so I assume the car was at once lowered by the first owner. The motor looks untouched.
I feel for the money paid I still got a good deal and my 13 year old daughter has already claimed it as her's when she hit's 16
Happy Honda Owner.... Make the wait for the Z06 more pleasurable

hey, welcome to the 7thgen family. there are a bunch of helpful people around, so if you have any questions regarding your 02 civic, feel free to ask. also i think someone here also owns a corvette too in addition to a civic.

yes, membername: whitecastle <--- owns a C6 vette.
welcome to the boards!
the 7th generation of civic does not have double wishbone in the front..... unlike the previous generation of Civics. Yes, the car will bounce, as does mine (I tell my passengers not to leant to far to the side or they will bump their heads).... there are aftermarket opions for that....

Hey thank's for the welcome everyone, glad to be here and to have my 2nd Civic, and yes she does ride a little funny, and your right, I won't be able to resist performing some level of modifications to her. It's going back to the dealership tomorrow to inspect the worn shocks so I will be certain to keep you posted on how they respond to replacing them.
I have already learned much about our generation Civic's in the few short hours I have read here in the past week and certain I will have fun learning much more over time.
