Neon light question

Ok i have some neons that i want to hook up on the inside of my car and i know where i want to put them and how to mount them thats the easy part. The thing im wondering is the ones i got are the ones that you would plug into your cigerette lighter and thats how they get power. But i want to hook them up to a switch so i can turn them on and off when i want to with out unplugging them. What im thinking is cut the cigerette lighter thing off and them one of those two wires is power and the other is ground am i right? so in turn all i would have to do is hook up the power one to my batter then a switch and then the light and then the ground would go from switch to light to a grounding location am i right or is there a different way to do it? Or is there just neons out there made like that that i can buy that arnt to much money. I have a 2005 civic vp i dont think it matters the car but if it helps. thanks alot guys and gals.

1. Yes the wires should be power. CCFL tubes (what you have) run on AC power, but most of the time the AC converter (from the DC the car powers at) is IN the base of the tube.

2. Just splice the wires with the cig. lighter plug wires behind the panel the cig lighter is on.

3. Put a switch on either wire, + or -. Done.

or

1. Don't do it cause neons usually look tacky and ricey.

Either way, I hope I helped.

put some leds in a group & stick them where no one can see them, but give off an ominous glow.

^^^ That's what I did too... Don't have any pix right now or I'd show you. Yeah it's really simple to run the neons to a direct line. What I did is mounted a switch in the center console attached to an inline fuse that connects my 4 neon tubes. Been working fine for the last yr and a half.

I did the same thing with two ultra bright red LED's at the top of each kick panel. Gives a similar light glow, and it's impossible to see the LED's. This was cheaper than neons, but required soldering resistors into the power wires as well.

I'm glad to hear that you got your setup working though. Post some pics.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life but, I would be interested in seeing how much light that LED you installed is putting off, in comparison to the neon...a pic would be great....thanks

depends on what LED you get...superflux LED's are stupid ridiculous bright. typical LED's are nice and bright when powered correctly...
