What does HID ballast generations mean?

I man looking for the best HID sollution and fuond out that there are different HID ballast generations?

dirtySAMURAI is a splendid one to behold

that's just the way HELLA categorizes their ballasts. AFAIK, there is only a gen3 and gen4 hella ballast.
