works like the remote for your tv. Send an infrared signal that is picked up by a compatible receiver. If you're asking this, you prolly won't be able to use them for anything constructive.

Or if you have night vision goggles they make them light up. Essentially it just lights up at a different wavelength than humans can see with the naked eye.
