Flying saucers!?...just new parts..Installed-3/29/08 more pics, video, review.
EXEDY RACING CLUTCH AND FIDANZA RACING FLYWHEEL INSTALLED! YAY!
:::::::::::::
Fidanza Lightweight Aluminum Racing Flywheel
Fidanza Part#: 191161
Weight: 7 Pounds
Price: I picked it up for a good deal, $137, if you look around you can find it, grip-force clutches on e-bay had it for this price a month ago. Regularly goes for 200+ or - a couple bucks.
Pros: Faster revvs, more power meeting the transmission, sportier feel. The Fidanza flywheel model allows you to unscrew and replace the flywheel surface area, prolongs the life of the wheel, instead of having some one have to re-surface it.
Cons: The price for labor far outweighs the price of the part. The Transmission on the D17 engine is a bea-ioch to get to/work on. I spent 400 bucks having a local transmission shop put it in. Expect to pay a good amount.
Review/Personal notes:
The first thing I noticed about the flywheel which was surprising to me, when I started the car, it started quicker. Which makes total sense, but just never though about it. Revs are much quicker, you can feel the difference immediately. I also feel that it made the car sound different. In a good way. Probably because of the faster sound frequency being emitted by the engine bay. The sound almost has a metallic quality. It's completely drivable with no difficulty "keeping the rpms up" during normal driving. I've read about people always being concerned about the rpms falling too quickly between shifts, but I don't feel that happens at all. I can feel power from the engine, when driving, not sure if it's the torque or horse, but I feel that more of the original power is being translated to the ground. I feel it exceeded my expectations. It's tight, I think every penny was well spent.

:::::::::::::::
Exedy Organic Stage 1 Racing clutch
Exedy Part#: 08801a
Exedy also makes a Cerametallic clutch kit for our cars, I opted for the stage one for drive ability etc.
Price: Again, I got a good deal, $250, I got it from Advanced Speed shop, they had the best price I could find. Some places sell it for 310+ or - a couple bucks. Look around for the best price.
Pros: Grabs like a *****! Increased Clamp load, quicker gear changes, get power to the ground faster. Sportier feel. More fun to drive
Cons: The install price, as noted with the flywheel. You have to press down a little harder to get the clutch pedal to go down, but it's not that bad at all. Noticeable but not bad. You have to get used to driving your car again.
Review/Personal Notes:
I love this clutch! It grabs like no tomorrow....almost like it WANTs to connect gears! Feels like it's anxious to do so. It was entertaining to myself, when I got in the car for the first time, I was really careful to let the clutch in slow because I knew it would be different, but damn! It jerked forward and connected like nuthin! It's funny because I feel like I have to learn how to drive my car / drive manual again! It surprised me, and exceeded my expectations I would say. A strange note on the clutch disc, when I got the original back, it looked identical to the Exedy one! I was confused, because I bought my car used with 19k on it. Under the impression that nothing had been done to it, I compared the two pictures and couldn't find any differences, but then I saw something which gave it away! See below!
(Still don't REALLY know the difference between the one I had and the aftermarket one, but but I know it's not the same because of the difference in feel and clamp force etc. I thought it was what the disc was made of. And the fact that Daikin, which is the parent company for Exedy makes all the stock Honda Clutches, I assumed it looked similar. If anyone can find a difference, let me know!!)

And lastly, I had to get a transmission mount replaced, you can only get it from Honda, friggin thing cost 78 bucks!! unbelievable!

Summary/Conclusion:
If you want more power to the ground, GET these two things! So far I haven't experienced anything I didn't like about them. (Excluding the install price!
) They are some great upgrades!

Re: It's a flying saucer!? Nope, just new parts...
Nice. I'm waiting until mine gives out too... But who knows how long that will be because I had 255k on my old civic with the original clutch still in it, so... yea. We'll have to wait and see. But yea, that things looks nice!

Re: It's a flying saucer!? Nope, just new parts...
For my situation, the fly and clutch is still ok, the bearings desperately need to be replaced. So here was my reasoning:
The bearings need to be replaced, while im inside the trans, I might as well replace the clutch, because I'll have the whole thing open. if I have the whole thing open I might as well replace the flywheel too. And If Im replacing all these parts I should just get performance parts right? Heh, I love how my train of thought always ends up with me getting performance parts!

Nah I'm not going to do it myself. I would for sure try to do it if I still had a garage. I moved into a new apt recently that only has a carport. It's like a garage with no garage door. fits two cars. So I can't really just leave my car all disassembled out in the open. I found a great local shop that specializes in transmission work. Quoted me 300 for everything, I give them all the parts. hopefully i can get it in not this weekend, but next weekend. Thread Starter

Really? You couldn't tell if you were feeling horsepower or torque?
You can't "feel" horsepower. Torque is a measure of force. Horsepower is a measure that is derived from torque.
Nevertheless, nice parts. Now get some parts that'll make some power necessitating the clutch and flywheel.

I have 76 thousand on my car. According to the dudes at the shop, they said the stock pieces look ok (no unusual or excessive wear) I think you could get to 100k before changing it, if you drive easy, I don't though, I beat the crap out of my car. It's ok, we have a mutual understanding. (She likes the abuse!) Nah Jk, but seriously, replace em, it's a sweet mod.

Lol, how is that being an ***? Horsepower isn't a measure of force, it's a measure of work, torque is a measure of force. You can't "feel" horsepower. As for a clutch and flywheel, that's great to upgrade if you need to. I'm just not a fan of spending money on parts that don't really do anything for you. Not to say these parts can't but you know what I'm saying.

Re: Flying saucers!?...just new parts..Installed-3/29/08 more pics, video, review.
Well the story goes like this:
I was hearing bad noises from the transmissions, like a winding noise from one of the bearings in there. So after researching it a little bit, I thought It was the pilot bearing that was bad and needed to go, not to mention that the clutch was slipping and stuttering and if Im going to open up the trans to get to the bearing, I should replace the clutch while im at it, and if im replacing the clutch I should get the performance clutch. And if I'm replacing the clutch, i should get the flywheel too, to get it done all at once. So after all that was installed. Still have friggin bearing noise. Well with further research, turns out I was wrong, it's the Input shaft bearing that needs to be replaced. So whatever, I'll just keep my car in the garage, save up money and take it back in. cuz I know it's gonna cost me another couple hundred bucks. It's a frickin shame that because of the design honda used, im replacing a 30 dollar plastic bearing with a high cost of labor instead of spending that money on something to upgrade.

^Are you asking me? If so, I just have an intake an exhaust. The parts were replaced out of necessity. If you read post 19 you'll hear the details. Nice part is, when I get a turbo kit or whatever else for more power, I won't have to worry about translation to the ground.
