ok
i jumpered it.. i got a click ..

then i did resistance pin 3 to battery 3.6 ohms..
pin 5 gets 12v to battery .. almost blew my meter .. it actually survived resistance on voltage..

Ok start engine turn AC on
Do fans run?
Does compressor click on and clutch spins?

EDIT put relay back in first

You said you swapped relays a while ago....if you didn't know where it was, did you swap wrong relays?

i am impressed , i would have been chasing this forever.. i still have to isolate one wire for the thermo protector , maybe i can do it without taking it apart.. from above .. afraid it will short out..

You didn't know where the clutch relay was.
Which relays got swapped if you didn't know where the clutch relay was?

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

Best guess: Maybe.

You won't know for sure until it can be proven........Wait until it quits, then tap on it and see if that makes the system work again.

If you stuck a bad relay in the hole for one of the radiator fans, you may end up with a fan that doesn't run when it should.

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

it quit..i got out beat it .. nothing.. measure voltage pin 3 13 v, measured resistance thru pin 5 5 ohms.. but i was driving ... swapped relay with headlihts, its not the relay, same relay kicks the headlights on roght away...

then went to the gym since this happen on my way to the gym and i pulled over to see ... after the gym fired car back up, ac working..
driving back home it quit.. restested voltage and resistance same..
i tested the pin 3 resistance to coil while car running also it was bouncing around since its spinning..

it has to be a controller, or the ecu... if its a wiring issue it wont work and go back..

so am thinking do there cars have separate ecu for ac?

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

it has to be a controller, or the ecu...
No, it's not.

Your fans were still running when the AC quit cooling, the problem is between the clutch relay and the clutch.

i tested the pin 3 resistance to coil while car running also it was bouncing around since its spinning..
Should have been very steady. The field coil cannot spin. Nothing electrical there spins.

This sounds like it should be your problem. Verify that resistance HOT goes sky high.

if its a wiring issue it wont work and go back..
Sure it can. The field coil is one really long length of fine wire to make an electromagnet....and is now affected by temperature.

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

well it bounced between 0 and higher resistance i will verify again.. i thought pcm.. u might be right.. i will re-verify when car hot.

by spinning i meant car running it what effects resistance...

i car shut offf, and warm, resistance is steady at 5 ohms.. as it cools down drops to 3.6 ohms.

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

How large is the air gap between clutch plate and the pulley face?
How far does the outer plate move inward when it clicks on?

Spec is .5mm, does yours look like about double that or more?

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

i havent measured that yet..

ok i car cooled off, measure resistance at pin 3 , 3.6 ohms..

started car, measured resistance at 55 ohms.. recalibrated my fluke for leads, still 55 ohms with car running.. put the relay in.. BAM AC works and compressor..

pop in the car drove it till it quits, few miles..

came back took relay off car running measured resistance pin 3 , still 55 ohms..

jumpered pin 5 to pin 3 , sending 12 volts to it.. to make it click or run.. nothing.. still offf... shut the car of did the same thing, i hear it click..

whats the measurement for the clutch and where do i measure..? how do you measure it , make it click in or when its out?

and fans run normal all the time

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

To actually measure gap, I use a dial indicator....because a used clutch and pulley are not flat and a feeler gauge becomes inaccurate.

Why feelers are inaccurate when attempting to measure USED parts, worn surfaces are not flat:

You could push on the plate with your dingers and see......

If it looks excessive you ciuld pull out one of the adjustment shims

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

ok, i did not get a dial indicato but i had a feeler gauge.. it will fit in even engaged.

thats .514mm gauge .. another thing i noticed i can spin it by hand when engaged..

just as i can spin it when disangaged.. that tells me i got warn clutch..

can i adjust this more in with the shims..? its adjustable?

I measured the outside ring right where the dial is at the edge on outside...

where the shims are on the traingle i also have bigger gap than .5mm

You mean you can stuff feelers in whie it is powered up, not engaged. If it were engaged there would be zero gap.

Or you arent in the correct area

no i can stuff gauges on the outside rim when engaged.. power to it.. buy jumpering pin 3 &5.. clutch pulled in...

i can also spin it by hand then too. yes i realize there should be no gap then...

Re: 2005 honda civic dx ac compressor

i figured it out air gap is too big..

i need to find clutch holding tool for the three holes, and tighten the bolt inward.. whlie measuring air..

I need to know min i max AIR GAP OEM spec... autozone lists min at 0.35mm to max at 0.65mm.

their rental tool couldnt fit in my three holes to hold the clutch down..

If you can spin the outer plate by hand, then it is not engaged nor pulled in.

When the electromagnet is energized it pulls on the outer plate, which should then be pulled tight against the belt driven pulley. That's the loud click when the compressor engages.. If it is pulled tight against the pulley, it should be coupled with the belt driven pulley.

Either there is far too much air gap or the electromagnet is not working (or weak)

Power it up (assuming the clutch does not click on) and see if a screwdriver is attracted to it?

No special tools for this one. Adjustment is done using little thin round shims between the clutch hub and compressor shaft.
Remove shim(s) to decrease clearance as needed.
