I am having the same exact problem in my 2001 lx with D17A1 non- vtec but it loses acceleration at the same time! I'm baffled because it will idle all day long not a single problem. But as soon as i start to try and drive it, BAM 3rd gear at 3000-3500 rpms it starts to grrrrr and break up. Then loose power or acceleration! PLEASE HELP

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Got codes?
Got oil?
Got exhaust restriction?
Got intake restriction?

No restrictions, got oil, and the only code is for the O2 sensor because I'm running a 4 to 1 header with no cat.

The only other codes that popped up since this first began was misfire codes for each cylinder and a code for multi misfires but that was corrected when i changed the coilpacks

When it loses power (floor it and let it go as far as it can) does it backfire and pop in the engine compartment?

How long has this car been acting this way?
If I floor it, it acts like its just lossing power and popping but no backfire. I'm at a loss!
Popping through the intake might indicate it's lean, starving for fuel.
Just a guess here, so if I have a car in the shop and I suspect that's happening:
I'd use a scanner to watch the front O2 sensor values and see if it shows as lean during the event, and check fuel pressure--connect gauge, tape it to the windshield so I can read it while driving, and drive it so it acts up and see if the pressure drops a lot while it's acting up.
Got a ton of miles on this car?

It has been sitting and being worked on for 3 months now. I checked the codes today and it was the usual bank 1 o2 sensor. Believe it or not my car has less than 80000 miles.

The O2 code is P0135. But while trying to do the relearn procedure where you hold it at 3000 rpms for 5 minutes it threw P300,P301,P302,P303,P304

Re: Loses power @ 3000RPM
Ok that's a heater circuit code.
Shouldn't run in failsafe for that.
For the heater circuit inside the sensor ....Resistance spec says 3.0-3.6 ohms.
At 3000 RPM? Does it bog out at that speed?
Is it setting misfire codes because of how it runs?
The only reason they have you hold the RPM up like that is to get the engine up to operating temperature somewhat quickly.
It's not necessary to hold it there like that.... you can simply drive it around to get it warmed up.
What kind of work are you doing to it?
Does this car have a cat on it?
Does it sit outside in the cold?

I have a short air intake, a 4 to 1 open header and a flow thru muffler. I run only Royal purple oil and medium grade gas.
What I believe started the whole situation was shortly after i had replaced the valve cover gasket. I orginally didnt seat the spark plug tube grommets in the valve cover properly. So some oil got into the spark plug tubes. So i changed the spark plugs and coil packs first with no luck. Then I tried the map sensor with no luck. Next was the iac also no luck. Then was the evap purge valve, still nothing. Both O2 sensors were also changed. I even changed the IAT sensor. I think that about covers it! The only thing left is the throttle body and the ecu/pcm. So I just dont know what else to do.

Checked cam timing?
Does this car have a cat on the exhaust?
