Rep Power: 0 2005 Civic EX O2 Sensor Question
The retrieved code said failure in Bank 1 Sensor 1.
How many O2 sensors are on an '05 EX? I ordered this:
Zoom
Denso Before Catalytic Converter Oxygen Sensor - OE replacement, 2-wire 2005 Honda Civic EX 4 Cyl 1.7L -- DENSO SUPER CLASS FIRST TIME FIT OXYGEN SENSOR
Denso Super Class First Time Fit Oxygen Sensors are specifically designed to meet the challenging demands of today's engines. Each of Denso's Oxygen Sensor is constructed from the highest quality materials available. Manufactured to the OE standards and subjected to rigorous safety and performance tests.
Specifications:
Features:
Part Number: NP2349005
Location: Before Catalytic Converter
Type: OE replacement, 2-wire
Quantity Sold: Sold individually
Warranty: 12-month Denso limited warranty
Availability: In Stock
Fits 2005 Honda Civic EX 4 Cyl 1.7L
This is the wrong sensor. In looking further it looks like this:
Zoom
Denso Front Oxygen Sensor 2005 Honda Civic EX 4 Cyl 1.7L -- DENSO Corporation
DENSO Corporation, headquartered in Kariya, Aichi Japan, is the number one global automotive supplier of advanced technology, systems and components in the areas of thermal, powertrain control, electric, electronics and information and safety.
Part Number: W0133-1828743
Fit Note: At catalyst inlet.
Location: Front
Quantity Sold: Sold individually
Availability: In Stock
Fits 2005 Honda Civic EX 4 Cyl 1.7L
So there is a front, a before cat and an after cat. There are also premium and regular grades on all but this front one.
Again, how many sensors are there and which one is Bank 1 Sensor 1?

Re: 2005 Civic EX O2 Sensor Question
See #19 in the pic below, that's the front sensor.
Sensor 1/1 is the first sensor in the exhaust stream.
The second sensor is stuck in the side of the cat on yours.
Problem with ordering aftermarket, and I'm not going to double check your Denso numbers, is the front sensor on that car is NOT an O2 sensor in the traditional sense.
It is an LAF sensor.
Looks the same, does the same job, but it works different and is not interchangeable with an ordinary O2 sensor.
Looks like Majestic only wants $228 for theirs, and it would be correct.

Ezone,
That is a great reply, exactly what I needed. Thank you very much.
I know so little that I believed it when I was told that Denso was OEM. I am taking your advice and going with the genuine part. What is the right choice in the System/Component category to find the sensor or do you have a part # handy?
Thanks again,
Jason

Re: 2005 Civic EX O2 Sensor Question
Hint: Right click on the catalog pic, hit view image info, and find the root address
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/ Select YOUR car info or enter your VIN (more accurate), then scroll to "exhaust pipe - muffler" for this area of the car.
This is what I used, but I was guessing at your car info: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...PIPE+-+MUFFLER
FYI, Denso and NTK are both suppliers to the manufacturer (Honda and many others), so that info was correct. The genuine replacement part will probably be a Denso sensor.
What I don't know is if the parts you picked from Amazon or whatever were right for your car and your application.
Picking from a real Honda catalog helps remove the chance of error. (It also helps to know what you are doing in the first place.)

Re: 2005 Civic EX O2 Sensor Question
How do you tell whether o2 sensor is upstream or downstream?
I couldnt tell just from the diagrams.

Re: 2005 Civic EX O2 Sensor Question
This is some info i picked up from this very honda civic forum which says something differently for an EX
Secondary O2 Sensor: One Black wire; One Grey wire: and 2 white wires.
This is what I'm tracking as the correct diagram for the ECU as it pertains to the O2 sensors.
On the ECU Connector A pin 14: blk/wht - Secondary O2 Sensor heater control
On the ECU Connector A pin 25: wht/red - Secondary O2 Sensor
On the ECU Connector E pin 2: wht/red - Secondary O2 Sensor EX Only
On the ECU Connector E pin 6: blk/wht - Secondary O2 Sensor heater control EX only.
the secondary o2 plugs up on the bottom of the fire wall behind trans on ex harness
Behind Trans- no way? How come ? who is right? so confusing.
I have an O2 problem on my civic 03 ex and this thing confuses me big time.

Re: 2005 Civic EX O2 Sensor Question
EX and LX have different exhaust configurations, therefore the sensors are in different places (*in relation to the rest of the car*, not the cat)
Stare at YOUR exhaust, and find YOUR cat; What I said before about sensor location is always true.
EDIT: That pic linked above shows the parts diagram for an EX.

Re: 2005 Civic EX O2 Sensor Question
DO NOT USE BOSCH - Mine shorted out in 3 weeks. DENSO and NGK brands are the only OEM rated equipment. For what it is worth, the Secondary(read after cat) sensor from DENSO Part Number: 234-4209 is the 3month version and went out after 4 months on me. Part Number: 234-4220 is the 1 year version.
If you want the Primary Sensor(before cat) DENSO Part Number: 234-9017
