IAC & cat problem

hey guys while im waiting on my back brake plates to show up i figured i run the motor and see what problems i have there. this is what i have changed out so far:
cap & rotor
plugs, gap to .040 (ngk)
wires (ngk)
fuel filter

so after running the motor for awhile i started to see smoke coming from under the car it looks like its coming from the cat. so i turn off car and check the cat and it was really hot, i don't know if that means a clogged cat because it seem it was pushing out the exhaust just fine. now for the motor, i let the motor warm up to operation temp and started doing some low rpm revs and revs up just fine its just when the motor idles back down it seem not to catch itself as well. i have some vids i will upload soon.

i started to see smoke coming from under the car it looks like its coming from the cat.
Probably oil spilled or leaked onto the cat (or road debris, yard debris, spider webs, small rodents, etc.), it's burning garbage off the outside as it heats up to 500-1000 degrees F.

check the cat and it was really hot
It is supposed to be really effin hot!

its just when the motor idles back down it seem not to catch itself as well.
Does it run perfect other than the idle? It still has to learn how to idle since you reconnected the vacuum hose (in the other thread).

Re: IAC & cat problem

Sounds like it hasn't had the idle relearn done. May as well clean the throttle body bore and blade before you do it.

Ignore smoke on the outside of the cat. It's just cooking off garbage.

Re: IAC & cat problem

yea i was thinking about that today im going to take the throttle body off and clean it up and take off the IAC and clean that up too and maybe the TPS to see if that is dirty too. and just for anybody reading seafoam deep creep works really good. and thanks for the advice so far ezone i have owned everything from mitsubishi to chevy but this is the first 4 banger and honda i have ever owned so i was just a little unsure about some things.

Re: IAC & cat problem

I don't take anything off to clean a throttle body, other than the filter box cover to reach it.
I mash gas pedal to the floor with a brick or prop rod wedged against the seat.
Clean unit with carb cleaner and an old toothbrush.

You can ruin a TPS by trying to remove it or clean it. Honda has their TPS locked down for a reason.

Re: IAC & cat problem

Looks dirty. The buildup around the edge where the butterfly has to close is where it needs cleaned. Google how to clean throttle body?

Don't forget to clean the IAC and the air bypass screw passages too.

Re: IAC & cat problem

yea those passages look pretty dirty but overall its not too bad this is where the seam foam deep creep comes in, stuff works great on cleaning TB's just like on the eclipse i used to own. but I'm having some trouble with the IAC bolts so instead of me messing them up im going to take it to my favorite shop and have them take them off.

Can you detail this further please. Is the rpm bounce before settling at spec idle rpms? Does it steadily rev around 1000-1500 rpms for more than a few seconds before dropping down to proper idle?

When you clean the TB make sure to remove all build-up on the flap's outer edge. Buildup there can possibly cause the flap to catch and not seat properly right away.

Also, the throttle cable can stick at the bend locations (seated in perch(s)) and cause momentary sticking during deceleration back to idle. Try loosening up the perch mounts (for lack of better term) slightly or leaving the throttle cable at bends unmounted and see if that helps.

Re: IAC & cat problem

well i found the smoke problem and its the oil pan gasket is leaking, and i was taking the stuff off to get to the pan off and ran into another problem. the 2-1 pipe is cracking around the mounting point so i need a new one, and just had one question should i just go ahead and buy a header 4-2-1 or not. i mean, i already got a magnaflow cat but stock exhaust is going on. in my head it sound like the header would cause a bottle neck.

Is welding up the cracks a possibility?

Re: IAC & cat problem

nope to rusted and gone. to prep it for welding would just destroy it.
