Pending purchase 2001 EX coupe

Hi, new guy here. I'm considering buying a 2001 Coupe EX, 123,000 miles. Very clean. On the test drive I noticed the steering is a bit stiff, more so to the left than the right. There also seems to be some dead play in the steering. While going straight ahead and wiggling the wheel a bit to each side, no response. It feels ok as far as looseness, no noises that I noticed. After going through this forum, I see there are quite a few possibilities. I haven't gotten under the car to look yet, probably this weekend. I need to make a decision on the purchase, he's had a few callers after me. It's priced at $3000, book is ~$3450. this is my first experience with the Civic.

It also has a front end bounce while driving. Owner claims to be fine at highway speed.

Any advice?

Re: Pending purchase 2001 EX coupe

Thanks for the reply. it's a standard, and I don't know about the timing belt. i plan to change it within the next month....

I'm more concerned with the front end. I don't want to be on the hook for big $$ to repair what is obviously a problem.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

If you don't know, then have a professional give it a PRE-purchase inspection.
Could be the best money you ever spent if it stops you from buying a deathtrap.
