Wrong motor in my 2003 Honda Civic ex

I just got my 2003 Honda Civic ex engine replaced by this dum *** mechanic who put a d17a1 instead of the d17a2 so now I can't pass 4,000 rpm it's extremely annoying that I cant pass 80 mph. Can I just put on a d17a2 head on on the d17a1 block to make it pass 4000 rpm. And yes I have all the components for the vtec system

It can be done AFAIK.....but the D17A1 has lower compression than the A2, so keep that in mind.
Is the original engine wire harness is still intact? (connectors for the VTEC are still there and disconnected)? There are several differences in engine wiring harness from A1 and A2 engines.

Yeah, the -a2 head/-a1 block combo has been done, mostly for turbo setups due to the lower compression, just gotta check if the mechanic used the -a2 harness, like ezone said.

Yes the wiring harness is there from the a2 and yeah he connected everything for the vtec I just found about this by a friend that it was the wrong motor I just have the check engine for vtec system failure and I tried everything to fix until my friend pointed it out for me that it was the non vtec motor

Re: Wrong motor in my 2003 Honda Civic ex

What happened to the rule about the seller having to smog the car before sale? This would never pass smog test, by visual nor by codes.

Straight up swap if you use the correct stuff. New head gasket and manifold gaskets, fluids and whatnot.

Off the top of my head, EGR valve and intake manifold gasket (1 extra hole for EGR port) are the other differences between the A1 and A2 engines
for 01-03, only D17A2 used EGR
04-05, D17A1 and A2 both used EGR.

Does your current setup have the EGR valve in place?

Re: Wrong motor in my 2003 Honda Civic ex

What code does it have?

Does the vtec solenoid work?
Does the vtec valve work?
Does the vtec pressure switch work?
Got oil pressure?
Got oil pressure loss?

You got a rebuilt head or something for it?
Is the short bolt missing from the oil passage in the head?

Solenoid works , vtec spool valve works , pressure swtich works , good oil pressure , d17a1 bottom end with d17a2 head on it
