Starting Problem

I have a '95 civic sedan, and it starts up perfectly with no problems. But, it rarely decides to cut off the fuel supply to the engine. I know this because i don't hear the system prime at all, and i don't see the check engine light turn off. (The check engine light always turns off when the system is primed, and it stays on if no fuel is pumped in yet.)

My question is: What is the problem? Is it the fuel pump, or is it an electrical problem?

Note that all the ignition components including spark plugs, distributor, ect. are working perfectly. Even the fuel pump seems to be working, since it works every single day until this rare occasion.

Also, about an hour later after this happened, it started right up.

Re: Starting Problem

The main relay (PGM-FI) controls fuel injectors/pump. If the solder cracks on the relay it can cause this sort of problem.

From what I understand it's a bugger to get at on the old Civics. Driver side up in the dash. On mine you just pop out the glove box and it's right there.

Re: Starting Problem

Wow, those pictures really helped me! They don't look like they're located in the dash, but just right next to fuse box. Thanks for that!

Re: Starting Problem

I was just chasing that problem on my 91 civic....The car would be running normally and then out of the blue..it would start running rough and die a minute later. Wouldn't start again until the next day. Anyway I wanted to inspect and resolder it myself...(videos on youtube) but i felt bad that a shop had done some diagnostic work for free, so i told them to install it and save me the old one. I wanted to see if had cracks...well...they didnt have the old one for me...lol so after some persistant questions and a few days later, I found out why...
They did install a new relay but simply bolted it to the top of the fusebox. They unplugged the origional one and swung the connector over and plugged it into the new relay mounted in a new location.
Turns out that the new relay didn't solve the problem anyway. After that, I changed the coil and installed a new control module in the distributor. Just telling this story as it may give you an easier option regarding istalling a new relay. Personally I think they locate it off to the side to keep the relay away from any interior heating sources...

Re: Starting Problem

^ the OP stated that the fuel pump wasn't priming at ignition which lead me to believe main relay.

Re: Starting Problem

Alright, so I changed the main relay. It worked out for a while until just recently. Now its starting to act up.

I started to have the same problem as before. When i pumped the gas, it kicked in right away. Then later that day, it just wouldn't pump gas through. After i waited about 3-4 minutes, it finally kicked in. After that, the waiting period for it to kick in gradually shortened, and now its working fine.

Im just worried it'll happen again, I dont want it to act up anymore. Any other suggestions? I dont think it would be a fuse for the fuel pump, because it wouldn't work at all if it was.

Re: Starting Problem

Since you have changed the main relay and it is still acting up. try going and checking your grounds on the fuel system. from the fuel pump to the main fuel relay. but if you still have the stock fuel pump from 95 you might want to look into getting a new one.

Where is this ground located? I replaced this relay with a Honda genuine main relay, thinking it'll work. But it is still acting up. Its still having a delay problem every time I try to start it.

I don't want to spend so much money on the fuel pump, and not solve the problem. So how can it be a problem with the fuel pump? It just seems like a bad electrical connection somewhere. I also replaced the ECU 15 amp fuse in the engine bay fuse box, nothing changed.

Re: Starting Problem

you got two ground locations. there is one right there under neath the carpet by the driver side. it is right there on the left side where your thigh would be when you sit in your seat. and the other is up underneath the dash by the fuse box. you can follow the wires from the fuel pump and it will lead you right to it.
