got price for k20a swap, and manual conversion

went to a shop this weekend in chicago to get a price to swap in a k20a into my automatic ex. the price for ALL parts and labor needed was $7,500. i thought that was a pretty good price considering the engine alone is about $5,500 and they will have to install the pedal assembly, shifter assembly etc. to convert it to 6 speed. i should have this done by the end of the year if everything goes as planned. what do you guys think?

chocobo15_2000 07-11-2004 05:19 PM

sounds good to me! engine swap and tranny swap? for 7500? go for it! ^_^

it usually costs bout 7 grand just to swap the engine. This is the JDM k20 right? i'm assuming that since you said k20a.

civic01vtec 07-11-2004 05:21 PM

sounds like a good price for a auto to manual conversion too.

btw...........is it a jdm k20 ?

civicdude04 07-11-2004 05:37 PM

yes it is the jdm k20a. when he told me the price i was like :damn: im saving all my pennies now! :D

doubledeuce2k2 07-11-2004 06:06 PM

swap, mounts, all that shit he's gonna be doing it for free labor in the end. damn... what're you doing for the wheels/suspension?

EnProceso 07-11-2004 06:10 PM

all you would need is a wrecked donor car and just pay for the labor. but that is a good ass price for a swap/tranny conversion.

HoldDaMayo 07-11-2004 06:38 PM

they must have a good engine/drivetrain hookup!! good luck!

i already have that taken care of. i have 17" adr m-sport's with nitto nt450 215/40/17's. for suspension i have hayame v2's dropped 3" in front AND back (by the way have had no problems with them at all), and dc sports front strut bar.

civicdude04 07-11-2004 11:07 PM

hopefully everything goes through alright, im sooo anxious to get it done! who on this site has the k20a (jdm) in there 7thgen? id like to talk to someone that has done it to see how they like it, even though i imagine its fast as hell!

whitevic 07-11-2004 11:15 PM

There are several, you just have to seek them out.

Mike4831 07-11-2004 11:34 PM

for 7500 you could build your engine right, and turbo it. that is insane. basically the price of another car.

so you're gonna use 02-03 SI axles? that's what i meant.

and as for a wrecked donor car, have fun finding a wrecked Honda Integra, and then paying to have it shipped to this country, for under $7500. unless you find a wrecked RSX that did the swapp, it's not gonna happen.

i would get a signed contract for that $7500 price, it seems too good to be true.

civicdude04 07-12-2004 11:18 AM

yes i would use the si axles, and i would not even bother looking for a donor car because yes, that would be impossible.

civicdude04 07-12-2004 11:43 AM

would it be smarter to just build my little d17, turbo it, and convert it to 5 speed? i want it to still be reliable though

doubledeuce2k2 07-12-2004 01:18 PM

turbo means maintanance. engine swap is a lot more reliable. i say do it for that price.

Green Civic 07-12-2004 02:38 PM

Car means maintance. As long as you keep good care of your parts, you'll be fine. I know of some people that have a b18 swaped and turboed as a daily driver. They keep good care of their cars and the cars last a long time. A honda motor is reliable. Period.

civicdude04 07-12-2004 07:14 PM

would it even be worth it to turbo my auto?

HoldDaMayo 07-12-2004 07:17 PM

I think so... Your auto tranny should be able to handle like 5-6 PSI which will allow your car to run well at around 170-180whp... with some mods, like a tranny cooler you could handle up to 8 which would put you near 200whp if tuned well... not too shabby for only about 4 grand invested vs at LEAST 8grand for a swap+manual conversion and still have less horsepower than the turbo...

Im An Auto running a turbo w/ a B&M Tranny Cooler. I am waiting for my BOV flange and Alcohol Injection should be here Wednesday. I will hit up the track Friday and let you all know what I run.

yes, please let me know how it goes! i have been researching a little, and might just go with a custom turbo kit. i would greatly appreciate it if you would update me! thanks!

ImportRacer2123 07-12-2004 08:00 PM

Not a problem...

RiceRocketeer 07-12-2004 08:31 PM

Is B&M reliable.. I've known a few people to have a problem with it..

ImportRacer2123 07-12-2004 09:08 PM

No problems as long as you install it correctly.

Green Civic 07-13-2004 11:04 AM

^^ Thats always the kicker. :D

civicdude04 07-13-2004 04:00 PM

anyone rebuilt the auto? seems to me like it would be pretty fast with a torque converter, and strengthen it.

doubledeuce2k2 07-14-2004 12:25 AM

a motor swap is a lot closer to idiot proof than a turbo. but most people on forum love the turbo. so... turbo is def. more easily upgradable per $

i don't hear stories of people who did motor swaps blowing their motors up. but then again, d17's aren't that pricey. whatever knocks your rocks

Heres the break down. I was in the same boat as you. I had my original d17 turbocharged and hey it was a fun little ride. If you maintain your turbo and keep it in good condition that would probably be a better way to go then throwing down 7,500 unless thats what your into. Now me on the other hand I blew up my engine with the turbo kit I had. So it was either put in a stock motor with 115hp or an rsx type-s with 200hp. With your set up your lucky to have the jdm k20a for only 7,500 that is a great deal. Its really all about what you want to do. I can tell you that the k series motors are very reliable I havent heard drastic problems with them just when shifting gears tend to grind. Yet you could also take that 7,500 bux and trow it into your d17. Personally I would go with the turbo on the d17 just because i love the sound of turbos and if you do the right stuff you can have a pretty fast car (Not sure how reliable it would be though). But the k series motors are great! Its up to you buddy :).

civicdude04 07-14-2004 11:17 AM
