D16y8 manifold on a D17a2

1 Attachment(s)
Yesterday my friends and I finished my car (Thanks to Brad and Morgan of Domestic Violence motorsports) To start, we got rid of the D17 manifold and put on a Honed port matched d16y8 manifold/TB, with a return fuel line, new fuel rail, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure gauge, Accel 255 fuel pump, and RC 550cc peak and hold injectors, injector resistor box. This was not an easy bolt on, Morgan had to make a remote idle air control valve/sensor, and brad needed to do a lot of new wiring. The new manifold pulls a lot harder in the higher RPM range (like 4000-7000) then the d17. Due to its shorter runners. Brad and Morgan say now we know what to do they would be willing to sell some on special request.

Hey!!

That looks great!!!
Now... are those people planning to make a new intake manifold for the D17 similar to the D16's EX manifold??

I believe they are planning to make a whole kit right?? (fuel rail, wires, sensors, return line, manifold, etc)?

I would be interested. I hate D17's Intake Manifold, 6th gen EX manifold is really great!
Please let us know!

C Orndorff 10-17-2004 10:18 PM

Yeah they want to make a whole kit. We used my car as the test car.

civic01vtec 10-17-2004 10:19 PM

nice work

BlackFire 10-17-2004 10:28 PM

Damn, that would be great!!

Your running 550cc injectors damnnnnnnnnnnnn.

FingerJ 10-18-2004 12:23 AM

Wow, that is tight. You must be running alot of boost to use 550cc injectors and a return fuel line.

gearbox 10-18-2004 12:30 AM

Wow that's nice, but sounds like alot of work.

Every one watch the video.

import2nr 10-18-2004 06:02 AM

nice

civic2nr819 10-18-2004 06:47 AM

looks good, any idea on the price of the kit?

acurastype01 10-18-2004 06:51 AM

yeah that looks really good

Logan3024 10-18-2004 10:47 AM

How is the heat soak on that manifold? Thats the only down side i really see to this set up

prototype 10-18-2004 12:07 PM

would any d16 intake manifold work? why not get an upgraded manifold? such as the venom?

Silversleeper 10-18-2004 12:22 PM

that is nice!

C Orndorff 10-18-2004 01:32 PM

The d16y8 manifold stays fairly cold, I drove it around on a 65-degree day for an hour the y8 manifold wasn’t hot at all. Also people often believe that the d17 manifold is lighter. The d17 is 13.2 Lbs (with TB, Fuel rail, injectors) the y8 is only 11.7Lbs (with TB, fuel rail, and injectors)

aznboysrfr 10-18-2004 01:39 PM

big props to making it fit

now, you should put a d16 SKUNK2 intake manifold on. that would be BITCHIN!

you can find a lot of ported skunk2 mani's on honda-tech ... ;)

n/a project hehehe

HyaBoosta 10-18-2004 02:23 PM

looks hot. keep us posted on the progress of the kit and price!

drunkenmagnum 10-18-2004 03:11 PM

sign me up i want one!

exclusive_vtec 10-18-2004 03:26 PM

very nice man... howz the difference.. get dynoed with the new mani... i want to see some numbers

opto_isolator 10-18-2004 07:22 PM

shit - how much modification was required to the intake manifold flange?! wow....

Skunk2ner 10-18-2004 07:29 PM

yesss, i love N/A mods.

C Orndorff 10-18-2004 07:31 PM

Not much modification needed. This was more of a turbo mod because i really needed the return line and the big injectors. But i could see N/A people getting some gains from this.

Cool - there has been a lot of talk that things wouldn't fit because of different bolt patterns, etc. If its virtually a direct bolt up, man there may be a lot of folks making some real power now.....wow! Would love to see more pictures or info!

C Orndorff 10-18-2004 08:22 PM

Well some of the modification is tricky. We had to make a remote idle air sensor because the D16Y8 and the D17 have different setups; also there was a good deal of change to the wiring. The map sensor had some stuff done to it also. Click on "see my ride" to see a video of when we first tested it.

I'll check it out - as far as the skunk2 or edlebrock manifold fitting - I don't think it will, only due to space limitations. here is a side by side of each:

It appears that the skunk2 and edlebrock are longer due to their runners. It also seems that the stock D16 manifold just barely fits!! Wow....

C Orndorff 10-18-2004 08:42 PM

Here are some more Photos of the Y8 Manifold. The last one is of Brad's 93 Civic hatchback (he just did 687WHP two weeks ago, he also runs a 10.2 at altitude)

Yeah its a tight fit, but it works.

Skunk2ner 10-18-2004 10:04 PM

damn, it would be sweet to get the skunk2 in there. but maybe soon companies will start making real intake manifolds for the D17 now

FingerJ 10-19-2004 12:47 AM

I just have to give this a bump, and say again it looks great.
