Question about blown shocks How can i tell if my shocks are blown other than taking the wheels off!?!? I have H&R sports springs installyed about 2 months ago and lately i feel my car is a litttle bit bumpy than normal...i dunno if I should bring it to the inspection...... is there any tricks?!?!?!??!  |
Look for oil leaks? |
you mean to look for if there is any oil on the springs?!??!!?! |
If your shocks are blown ... you will find that you ride will be way lowered then b4 ... if you are not sure ... bring it to a autoshop and get it checked ... ASAP ! |
Just run over a pothole and if you bottom out, problem solved. Sunapollo: I always thought Springs determiens the height of the vehicle and the shocks are the device that absorbs the impact, thus shocks lowers vehicle = |
if u see oil around the struts then it is most likely blown shocks and make sure u take off the springs (H&R) before you head to the dealer for warranty replacement i think my is blown but not going to get it fixed now...will get it fix at a point i couldnt stand the bounceness |
yeah. why would the car be lower when the shocks are blown!?!??!?!?!!? and plus, does anyone how much does it cost to get an inspectino in any autoshops?!?!! |
Just be nice and ask politely, you may get a free diagnostic depending on which shop and their schedule. Nonetheless you can contact KSR (416 7544249) (AzimuthX from 7th Gen Website Recommend...) and ask for a price on inspection. |

feel free to give some more comments !! mohawkboom !!! you study auto mechanics right ? you should know :D |
What about me? :) I'd still think my idea works best, find a pothole. Just goto a shop, jack it up, look for oily suspension. |
bottom out doesnt mean u have blown shocks. when i picked up my car from the dealer, on the way home from Roadsport my car bottom out, does it mean i have blown shocks? NO |
he has H&R spring!! if he bottom out alot, probably he might have blown shocks |
i probabally bottom out more than him cuz i am running neuspeed sports all around. |
H&R's shouldnt be a problem.... next time your in for an oil change just ask if there leaking just wait a few more months.... let the spring settle!! |
bottom out doesnt mean u have blown shocks. Right ... so get it checked out by professional :_beer: |
Take it to SPEEDY! They do free estimates.. I take advantage of them all the time. |
Well if the vehicle cant withstand the impact due to a blown shock, wouldnt it be more likely to bottom out. *MORE LIKELY* |
not really in my opinion my car was new from the dealer and i drove it home then i went on 427 from 401 then at the ramp i was going pretty fast (forgot how fast) and i didnt see a hidden pot hole (more like a hole made by those truckers) then the car bottom out (big bang sound) wasn't pretty but what i could do so technically AzimuthX that's not the case. but if the shocks are blown then it is way bouncy for sure |
Well it really depends, anyways forget the pot hole idea, how hard it is to jack the car, take off wheel lugs, take off wheel, inspect for oily suspension? Theres nothing you can when bottoming out, I suppose don't just brake, keep on going. |
just check it out professionnaly |
Sorry, but anyone who has ever installed springs themselves knows that shocks do not support the weight of the vehicle. Shocks control the BOUNCINESS, ie. the rebound action when the spring is loaded and unloaded. A blown strut will not affect the height of the vehicle, shot springs will. |
Thank you, I thought I was wrong. |
if there isn't any liquid suggesting a probable cause of leakage, press down on the car and push the shocks down then let go. observe how many times the car bounces before it stops. it should be about 1 - 1.5 times of bounce before it stops. any more than that and it means they're blown. in anycase take it to a professional. it might just be that you are not used to the springs. |
