Aem Pulleys And Unorthdox Pulley

i currently has installed the aem tru power pulley kit.. it comes with power steering and the alternator pulley...and there's one more pulley i need to change...and that's the crank pulley..but the only thing is aem does not have it only unorthodox have it..
have anyone try combining them together..
like power steering=aem
alternator=aem
crank=unorthdox
and is this a good idea? or a bad idea..thanks...and for the aem pulleys..
i feel the gain..cause the rev it faster

BLUENVY01 05-28-2002 04:02 AM

the combo will be fine, but as u know, pulleys have a tendency to drain power in other aspects... such as interior/stereo power... i think you're main concern should be whether or not to actually install a crank pulley, not to mention the Camgear. i've heard they have a lot of wear-n-tear on the engine, and shorten an engines life dramatically.... just throwin out a few ideas...

CapYoda 05-28-2002 04:29 AM

from reading some other thread, I'm not too sure if you can match the crank pulley with those pulley..

from reading orthodox's website, they dont suggest undriving the accessories pullies too much..

RunawaySoul 05-28-2002 07:05 AM

I was doing some researching into this myself. If you search for unorthodox, you'll come across this thread about how crank pulleys are perfectly balanced and how it's not a good idea to replace it, although you'll get some gains with this pulley replacement more so than the other pulleys. It was enough to convince me to not change.

they dont drain the power :shake: they are lighter and the aem alternator pully has a much larger diameter. this means that it takes longer to make one full revolution, thus less power generation

DC5@EM2 05-28-2002 03:15 PM

so its not a good idea to do any of the pullies cause i was thinking about getting the entire package from unothodox racing; including the p/s, alternator, and crank pulley. So am I better off leaving my stock pullies on or actually getting these. Also, im not into that car audio stuff so it doesnt really matter to me if my sound system gets less power or not.

nymbus2k 05-28-2002 03:42 PM

the crank pulley is only used for the track ... it is not recommended for daily driven cars ....

GreenVenom 05-28-2002 08:00 PM

Someone had posted in an earlier tread that by mixing aem with unorthdox that it was impossible b/c the unorthdox rotates different or something like that can't really remember though. but i do know that changing the crank pully is wear you will get most of your power increase!!!!! not sure how it will wear on your engine though!!!

GreenVenom 05-28-2002 08:03 PM

the tread was crank and pully's i think and it was boost that said it check it out cool!!!!!!

Turtle 05-28-2002 08:16 PM

If you were to mix the AEM pullies witht he Unorth crank pulley, the accesories will be highly underdriven. In theory, you will notice a huge difference in revving up and hp wise, but you will also notice a difference in light dimming and more effort in steering the car. The Unorth alt and ps pulies are just lightened pullies. THey arent underdriven at all. I am just thinking about getting hte Unorth PS pulley just for the looks. Just my 10 cent becasue my 2 cent is free.

1028CiViC 05-28-2002 09:02 PM

alrite..thanks for the idea..
but which one is more gain..
the crank? or p/s and alternator..

Blown 05-29-2002 03:02 PM

The crank would give you the most power gain, just remember, by saving weight on rotating mass on rotating engine parts, you get power. The crank is the heaviest pulley, so, would give you the most gain. Before you actually think of getting the crank pulley, take a look at how hard it would be to take off! I did and that instantly changed my mind.

Martin 09-03-2002 10:30 PM

Wouldnt removing and replacing the crank or all the pulleys be worth the gain to have fun riding ?

I am seriously looking for torque gain at idle starts, but will changing the crank only improve enought so I wont be changing m minde like many members in here ?

dacivic 09-04-2002 11:04 PM

I am not into stereo, so it is safe to just get the AEM pulley kit or it is still not safe and wear the engine down?

orso 09-05-2002 12:09 PM

i have never heard of engine wear because of changing the accessory pullies. i would do it if i had the money. you shouldn't have any problems.

bo0sT 09-08-2002 05:47 PM

I know for a fact, from EXPERIENCE.. that you CAN NOT mix match pulley sets. either stick with the two AEM gave you.. or buy the full set from unorthodox. The pulleys are different sizes, weights, etc when made my different companies. You will screw up your timing, and screw yourself. Pick a set.. and stick with it. I recomend UR.. the entire set is just a few pounds.. and most of the gain will come from the crank pulley.

1028CiViC 09-08-2002 08:27 PM

That's rite, I don't think it's a good ideal to mix and match. Right now i am using Aem's and i have run a 200 watt amp with a 1 10" sub and it's still ok. Ppl who are interested in getting pulley's i would recommend u to get the the unorthdox, because this set of kit comes with 3 pulleys..and Aem only come with 2...and u can't mix and match..
cause the belts don't fit...

FamilyMan 09-09-2002 12:33 PM

I am using the UR Ultra SS (3 pulley set) and like it very much. Most of the underdrive affect on the UR set comes from the crank pulley and weight savings. 3 lbs vs. 12 lbs. The PS and Alt pulleys are almost the same size as stock. Your engine will rev quicker and have less engine braking. This is especially noticable at higher speeds.

:susp:
I know, I know...alot of people say OBX is junk, but they also have a 3 peice set, crank, steering and alternator. Do you think there worth getting, and I should probably look into what they underdrive?

Booohahaha 09-09-2002 09:41 PM

sure if u trust OBX go ahead and get it
:):)

1028CiViC 09-11-2002 10:18 AM

So no one has did it..Mix and match...
How much is just the unorthodox crank it self..if i really do get it..
i will need new timing belts..

Timing belts??? Here is the website for UR: UR Racing

RoBBUsaF 05-15-2003 03:26 PM

crap! i bought the aem pulley set and an ur crank pulley thinking it would be ok.... does anyone have this combo to this day because this thread is kind of old... also, did the belts that came with the aem pulley set work with the crank pulley as well?

GideoN 05-15-2003 05:03 PM

Damn dude, this thread is very old. I don't know if they fit and I haven't heard of anyone having the combo and working. you should just get all unorth for the uniformity of everything and it will work better. Hope everything gets worked out for you RoBBUsaF.

RoBBUsaF 05-15-2003 05:59 PM

anyone want to buy aem tru power pullies? they are red and have never been used... =*( belts included...

CGodwin3103 05-15-2003 09:09 PM

I can't recall the thread i posted in about the crank pulley... search for the thread, I discussed harmonic balancers, crank pulleys, and the entire ur set...

From an understanding of how to derive power from pulleys, there is really only 2 effective ways to do it, and aem and ur's technologies and methodology are completely opposite on the spectrum.
Unorthodox uses an underdrive theory for their pulleys (yes the crank is the only power added, the other 2 are show, accessory, and the other) , however on the other end of the spectrum is aem's method...

Aem's method is to enlarge the pulleys, I will update, but look for the thread, i had an exact definition of its method in that thread, and it's been so long.. i will update once i get back from seeing and paying for the matrix2, yes, it was good, i was invited to the sneak preview and given a ticket for last night... i had already bought this ticket.. oh well..

maybe the aem will have seeped back in..

FAMILYMAN is correct, and all 3 of the ur pulleys eqaute to about a maximum of like 5 or 6 grams heavier than the lightest of the stock pulleys.

sorry i can't remember right now, will return with completion.

jdm_bb 11-11-2003 12:21 PM

I know a member Macfay has did this aem pulley and unorthodox crank
but i am not sure which belt he has use.

ImportRacer2123 11-11-2003 01:03 PM

Ack! Attack of the dead threads

RoBBUsaF 11-11-2003 06:42 PM

my car is in the shop and since no one bought my pullies im having kms throw the aem ones in with my ur crank. hope it works..

ImportRacer2123 11-12-2003 03:24 AM

Rob when is it due out? and what is being done to it?
