ok i'm going to try and build my first box. I used winisd as best as i could to try and figure it out. It's a dd 3512 single sub in a 5 cuft ported to 40 hz. Here's my question. I'm going to slot port it. I was just wondering what the numbers in vent match mean? is it better to try and make the port as high and wide as i can fit in there? does that have an effect on how the sub will sound? thanks for the help

I would download perfect box and use that. It will give you a box design and port sizing all in one program and then plot of the response of the sub. You can also call DD and ask a tech for his idea. Most techs are more then happy to talk on the phone for awhile discussing what will sound best for your car and your music style.

I'm pretty sure that if you just make the slot the same surface area and depth, it'd be the same as a round one or something.

Yeah that's what I use, winisd. I was just wondering if there's any advantage of making the slot bigger. It'll still be tuned to 40hz, but say I go from a width of 4 in to 6 in. It increases the length of my port by 7 in. Is there any reason to do this?

Vent mach has to do with the velocity of air moving out of the port. If its to high you will have a noisy whistling port. If you going 5 cubes (assuming thats build to) you should use 50 square inches of port, 12.5 inches deep. added port area will help increase efficiency to a point. anything over about 80% of you cone area is going to act kinda like a hole in the box.
