fiberglass insulation?

i know that when i used to build home speakers, it was always good to put r12 (fiberglass insulation, used in attics a lot) in the enclosure, is that better for sealed enclosures? the reason why i ask is because for some reason my sub doesnt hit low tones like it used to, it makes me wonder if A) it's out of phase, B) theres too much resonance in the enclosure, any ideas?

has anything changed with the wiring since it stopped hitting the lows like it use to?

booba5185 06-19-2005 01:56 PM

nope, everything is the same, it just doesn't hit lows like it used too

anyone even have any idea what i'm talking about doing?

I know some box builders use polyester stuffing to "fool" the speaker into thinking that the enclosure is bigger. Since the wiring hasnt changed, I would bet its resonance in your box canceling out some of the low end. When I built my FG box, I coated the inside of the box with spray on rubberized truck bed coating so their would be less standing free waves. Basically filling the enclosure or coating the walls of it with something that will result in an uneven surface will help cut down on resonance.

the only problem i could think off is that it might change the volume of the enclosure

yeah it will, but sealed enclosures can vary by up to 20% without a noticeable affect in sound output

i was thinking of build a ported enclosure also, now could i use my current sealed enclosure, and cut a port to the correct size?

nope, ported enclosures need to be built to a specific size based on the frequency you want to tune the box to. Ported boxes have very tight tolerances for volume of the enclosure
