Vtec solenoid DIY?

I have an 05 civic. Went to a shop and they said that the car needed a new vtec solenoid+gasket. They were trying to charge me $375 for the part+$125labor! I looked online and the part is around 100 bucks. Is it hard to replace yourself? They were asking for to much right?

FOR what reason do they believe it needs replaced? Got specifics?

Most times they simply leak (replace gaskets) or have a code related to low oil level/pressure.

I think he said it malfunctioned and they could see it gushing out from there

He said they could see it gushing out from there and said he was 99% sure it was that. Didnt really give me specifics.

So the problem is just an oil leak?

It can leak a whole bunch because it's got full system oil pressure behind it.
You can replace 2 cheap rubber gaskets and that should seal it right up.

upper gasket, Honda part #36172-P08-015
lower gasket, Honda part #15825-P2M-005

From another post, with random goggle images:

This one has the top half of the valve circled, you can see where it lives on the engine
Attachment 90128

And the valve taken apart to replace the rubber gasket under the electrical winding portion in addition to the big rubber gasket that's easy to change

(do NOT lose any small parts or you will be buying the entire valve)
