timing belt question

hello everybody..

i'm new to this forum. bought a 96 civic coupe 5spd EX recently. i just had the timing belt, water pump and all belts changed at 89000 miles by a local mechanic shop using all OEM parts. however, the belt was making some noise when it stops and idle, around 700-800 rpm, the mechanic said its normal to new timing belt. the car runs no problem tho. just wanted to see if its true or have I got fooled by him? shouldn't it be more quiet since i had this tune up? any kind of information will be appreciated. thanks!

Re: timing belt question

the belt doesnt just make noise, something is out of adjustment for it to be doing that.

Re: timing belt question

so its because of the timing belt too loose or tight?

is there any noise above 800 rpm? you should ask your guy if he checked the belt tensioner for a rough bearing, if he felt any roughness he should have replaced it. he is giving you bs when he says noise from the belt is normal.

the Idler Pulley Bearings are gone, get a new pulley set-up, and your problem will go away

there's no noise after 800rpm...the car runs fine...so does it mean i have to replace the tensioner again?

yuppers. and if you are doing it yourself, a little white lithium grase never hurt anyone, yet

An over tighten timing belt will make a noise at idle as well. Been there done that. Not saying thats your case, just keep it in mind. Always good to start with the easiest and least expensive fixes first, and work your way through the other variables.
