Brake Lighs stays ON - Honda Civic 2001 LX

Hello,

I have a Honda Civic 2001 LX and the brake lights stays ON without the car running. When I unplug the connection from the brake, the lights turns OFF.

When I plug it back in, stays ON...

What could it be? I'm afraid to bring it to the "stealership" and get "rob"...

I appreciate any help and feedback..

Thanks!

There is a hole in the brake pedal arm that has a plastic plug/pin inside where the pedal arm meets the brake switch actuator... if the plastic pin comes out the it allows the switch to stay on. Look at it closely, and lightly work the brake pedal by hand and you should be able to diagnose.

The brake light on the dash? or your taillights?

When I unplug the connection from the brake,
What connection? The one on the pedal? be a little more specific please

Possibly the ground on the ebrake. Trace it and see if its connected properly and that there are no breaks in the wire.

There was like a "white plastic" that fell when I opened up underneath... The brake lights and the light in the middle stays on. Also, when the car is running, the brake lights don't work... Thanks!

yeah, that plastic piece is probably the culprit. out means lights come one, in means they are off. I would see if you can find another switch at a junkyard or something. or get a new one from advance or something like that. Good luck...

Appreciate it... the switch is good.. it was .. not sure what it is called.. it's the plastic that is on the brake metal part. I placed a replacement "metal" screw.. so when the brake is not pressed.. it pushes and sensor works...

what is that piece called? where the plastic broke on the brake metal itself. It has a hole and placed a metal screw and tightened it... Appreciate all the help... Thanks!

I would try to find a replacement plastic pin to put back in... or glue the part you found and put it back in place.

Not sure why they use a plastic insert, but they have used them for a while.

I've attached a picture. I've fixed this problem on nearly all my Civics. Why Honda hasn't corrected this design flaw after 20 years is a mystery to me.
I usually fabricate a little nub for the switch to push on. Just something to fit in the hole that's not to thick, but will not fall out.

dont know why they didnt just remove the piece completely and have the switch press directly against the brake pedal metal piece instead. maybe there is a way to adjust the switch reach so it doesnt need the plastic nub.

^^^ Not sure why they do it that way either. There has to be some reason for it.

Has anyone ever looked at any Toyota models to see if it is done the same way ??

one of these clips with a nice flat face held with a tiny dab of goop it would last forever.

The proper name for the piece is "Pedal Bushing & Pedal Stop Kit." I just went to NAPA Auto Parts and purchased it. This forum & responses helped me find what the exact problem was and how to fix it.
