New camshaft?

Ok well my civic was leaking oil fairly slowly since i changed it to full synthetic and believed thqt my oil pan gasket was the culprit so i took it to my bosses friends shop and after there inspection they figured it was the cam/crank seals, reluctantly i ok'ed the full timing job to go along with it on friday. Today they call me and i was expecting good news that it was done but sadly that was not the case, they attempted multiple gaskets to stop the leak (4 different aftermarkets and 1 oem) then came to the conclusion that the camshaft itself was the culprit($700 fix) and that was causing me to wonder why a camshaft would fail.

Re: New camshaft?

I can't see yours so I don't know for sure,

but I have seen some engines that need the cam seal driven in "deeper than flush".
The outer lip of the seal doesn't cover the cam surface when it's only installed flush. Big leak.

See if this might be the problem.

Re: New camshaft?

If it is indeed a camshaft issue and you have an ex, I might have an OEM ex camshaft I'll let go for cheap, assuming it's still "preserved" in assembly lube like I left it. It has prolly 130k on it..

The only issue being shipping to Canada?

You might as well get a crower for $355. I have an extra d17a2 cam off a 2003 Acura 1.7EL.

hhhmmm, strange coincidence isnt it?

WHY would you do this?

expensive oils are over rated, frequency is more important,

your chances of an oil related failure in these engines is pretty much zero,

your camshaft SEAL might be leaking, but not the camshaft itself, thats just nuts

Re: New camshaft?

PROBABLE CAUSE: 2001 Honda Civic EX - Excessive end play in the camshaft.

Re: New camshaft?

Seal must go deeper than flush.
I bet they aren't pushing the seal in far enough.
So even if they replace the cam, you will still have a leak if the seal isn't in far enough.

Stand by for a pic soon

Re: New camshaft?

well i havnt seen the damage myself cause our stupid work truck broke outside of town but appereently theres a groove cut in the camshaft

Re: New camshaft?

Oooh... that's be a reason.

Re: New camshaft?

i was thinking only parts were thrown at it to fix it and no effort to figure out why it happened so the problem persists...

Re: New camshaft?

I probably would have tossed a seal in it too. You can't see grooves worn until the seal is out of the way and only if you are looking for it.
That isn't something I've seen here on Hondas, although I've seen it in the past many times on other brands of high mileage vehicles.
Maybe the oil we use now has a lot to do with it? IDK.

'Wear sleeves' are available for some applications, although I've never needed to find them for a Honda.

Re: New camshaft?

It's already out, and now it's nicked up too?

Top pic looks like the wrong end.
Bottom looks like the pulley end?

If you slide a new seal over the line and the amount of drag on the seal changes when it hits its normal wear spot, its probably enough to leak.

If you can hang a fingernail in the groove, it's definitely enough to leak.

Re: New camshaft?

nay the nicking is from it being on the shop floor, well its done 660 for labour 246 for timing kit and like 460 for used beat to shit engine they pulled the cam from for a total of 1518 dollars now i have to deal with a used engine i have no idea to do with

Re: New camshaft?

Yeah man I had no real answer so I put that up.

What does the word "hiccup" mean to you?
I have no idea what it means, nor do I have any clue what your car did to make you use the word hiccup.

Got any codes?

sicken04 02-09-2014 08:07 PM

Re: New camshaft?

just ment this was the first time it just cranked(6-8seconds) with no starting and no codes

Re: New camshaft?

Could be a fluke, could be any of a dozen things. IDK.
Gas tank under a 1/4?

Can't really do much to figure it out if the problem isn't present.

sicken04 02-09-2014 08:19 PM

Re: New camshaft?

ah ok gas is around 1/4 anyways ill just go on till i get a real problem
