Just changed 8th gen Auto Trans Filter

Yes the automatics have an external trans filter as well, its about $27 from the dealer (part# 25430-PLR-003). I havent seen anything stating the intervals in which it should be replaced, but I figured for $27 it couldnt hurt, it looked pretty dirty to me (112k miles, original owner had a few trans fluid flush's done to keep it clean, in the stack of maintenance records).

Remove the air cleaner assy (top cover, filter, 3 10mm bolts, Phillips band clamp and hose clamp) pull it all out if way lifting bottom portions rubber grommet over a nipple.

The Trans filter is held on with a 10mm bolt and a 2 part
clamp, 2 hose clamps must be removed as well as the 2 hoses connected to the filter, use some channel locks to twist the hose while it is still on the filter (to break them free, be careful that you dont chew up the hoses.

The lower hose and hose clamp can be accessed from under the car also.

Not having ever done this before, how long did the task take you to complete?

Having never done it before you should plan on about 1 hour total time including the 10 minutes for drain and fill of the ATF (2.5 qts, please verify in your owners manual).

Once you become familiar you can do it in about half the time.

I had an argument with two dealership employees over the existence of this filter, I was right of course

UBNPAST...is it required/necessary to drain the transmission in order to change this part?

I don't believe you have to but why filter dirty transmission fluid, I bought 2 cases of Honda dw1 atf (12 qts) @ $85 ea shipped. Change the atf also, it does get dirty pretty quick.

Ubnpast.........................tyvm

I sorta put the cart before the horse.

I did a drain and fill LAST week...and...TODAY I got my external transmission filter delivered from Majestic auto parts.

I was going to install that filter today and was hoping to hear that I didn't have to drain down the ATF fluid.

I expect some mess.........

Boy-o-boy, there is nothing to that little external filter. Consequently, I could see how it could get clogged so easily.

I think I will open it up the old one and take a look inside, once I get it on the work bench.

The filter is higher than the fluid level.
The only mess will be the fluid trapped within the filter and lines.

Use a tubing cutter if possible for a clean cut with no debris.
I wonder how much of the mess in the pics is from hacksawing the filter can.
