ticking noise My car has a little over 5000 mile on it and just changed the oil in it. It was making a ticking noise before and now after changing the oil. Any one elses eninge tick? Its not real loud but sounds kinda like a valve, but should nt be cause the engine only had 5k miles on it.I took my muffler off and havent replaced it yet. Would this cause it? |
Yeah I hear the same noise out of my engine. I think it's pretty normal..:susp: And I've got 18K miles already. |
No, i don't think not having a muffler would cause the ticking noise. I don't think it's serious though. |
I've never heard a Civic that doesn't tick. |
maybe its a timer to the start of the end of your car:susp: |
if it kinda sounds like a helicopter type noise that you only hear when the car is idling, then its just the normal operating noise of the pcv valve.....all civics tick. |
get your timing belt checked, my car did that same crap but when i accelerate it stopped and then i found out my belt was breaking up, honda should check that for you for free anyway Dathan |
spark plugs? |
That ticking noise you are all hearing is the injectors! That is all it is. You can hear the injectors clicking one and off is all. Nothing to worry about. All fuel injected cars do that. |
Re: ticking noise I was trying to search and figure out where the noise is coming from myself. I have 168k miles on mine, it started lightly at 100k miles. I replaced the clutch a couple thousand miles ago, and it wasn't anywhere in the trans, clutch area. I was thinking injectors, or pcv (both I have not touched on the car.) It doesn't make any noise when I engage the clutch in 1st gear, until I let off the gas a little, and pull a sudden vaccuum on the motor. It will then do it pretty much all the time in city traffic (low speed, lower gears), and I think road noise drowns it out ant highway speeds. I let the car rest for a while, and it does it again. My civic was much quieter when it was new all the way to 100k miles. If it's nothing, I can live with it, but If it's a sign of a problem, I'd like to nip it now instead of letting it grow. |
Re: ticking noise could just be the injectors or the valves tapping. have you ever had a valve adjustment? run some fp60 from lubecontrol.com in the gas, that will clean up the injectors after a while. |
Re: ticking noise Dont wory about it dude its the infamous honda knock from being driven hard. they all do it, its from head wear (cam, valves, spring, ...ect.) |
Re: ticking noise It's a bomb. They started putting them in when they realized that the cars they made last for a long time. They want you to come back more often to buy a new car. If the ticking turns into a beep, jump out of the car and run in the opposite direction. Hope this helps you. Good luck. |
Re: ticking noise ^^can you really blame them though, they need to sell new cars somehow! |
Re: ticking noise Do you really mean 5000k miles......taking muffler off a brand new car....*sighs*...have you taken anything else off? |
Re: ticking noise you're probably hearing injectors. for the second guy, ever do a valve lash adjustment? |

Re: ticking noise My 2002 si is doing the same thing. It has 112,000 miles on it. I took it to one mechanic who told me that it was the timing chain. I took it to the Honda Dealer and was informed that they NEVER replace the timing chain. He told me that there should never be a need to replace the timing chain, that the only thing wrong with the car was that I needed a valve adjustment. Please help me. Can the timing chain be replaced? |
Re: ticking noise My 01 does the same thing. I have about 75k miles. I too assumed pcv valve and plugs but after changing both it's still there. I also ran some octane boost to help clear the injectors and yep still there. I think I have pretty much narrowed it down to the valves as it kinda sounds like they are tapping. I only hear it at idle as I assume with increased rpm the sound of the engine drowns it out. Yes it's annoying but you get used to it. I wouldn't worry too much about it honestly, just turn the radio up a bit as that's about as cheap a fix you can get. |
