Rusty Sparkplug Sleeve = ?

I just installed a set of Denso Iridium sparkplugs and I noticed that the leftmost sparkplug (stock) and its sleeve (the metal leeding into the spark plug socket) were a little rusty. It's as if there's a localized heat spot in that area and it promoted the rust formation. All of the other cylinders are normal. It's not the combustion chamber. It's that cadmium plated cylinder that leads into the spark plug when you take out the ignition coils.

Any ideas?

Weird. Is it just powdered? Or is it seriously eroding?

Hmm... It looks like it's rusting from the inside-out. It's bubbleing, you know? It's flaking. The rest of the sleeves are fine though. Maybe the spark plug wasn't sealed properly from the factory? Maybe something is letting more of the heat from the combustion chamber through than the other plugs? ???

Saw the same thing when i installed densos in my neighboor's accord. His original spark plugs were lose so i guess fuel was leaking....

So maybe your stock spark plug was a little lose or had a gap? Just an idea.

No, I didn't fix it. I thought that I could get to it if I remove the valve cover. I think these sleves are attached to the head though, so I'de have to remove the head to replace the sleeves. Too much trouble for me. Maybe when I go and tweak something within the engine. Then I might replace those.

it's water that getting in or has gotten in. living in colder temps will cause this in most cases..

I have Denso IK20. On Sunday I checked the sparkplugs and found that I have the same problem. The 3rd sleeve from the left to right, standing in front of the car looking towards engine, had lost of rust dust. I checked in there and there is some rust forming in there.

zen_master 05-03-2004 08:21 PM

damn..

i just checked...

it's not only only the leftmost....it's on all 4 of em..

anyway,

i just bough one set (4) of NGK iridium IX..

i bought one tube of anti-seize....which definitely important..

and i also bough one tube of "DIELECTRIC" for the ceramic part of the plug..

do you guys think i need to use this Dielectric thing?

it says that i've to use it on the ceramic part and the cable.....which is on the hole of the tubular thingie (my first pic)

whadday think?
