Less Glare Head Unit Install (DIY)

There is not a good thread that contains all this info with pics, so I thought I'd save everyone some time and throw in some pics. Much props to Popcornplaya, cuz I followed his DIY really close with a few changes.

The pics are from my 2001 Ex, 5 speed, Coupe

For this install you'll need to get:

Metra parts #99-7865 (double DIN dash kit)
Metra parts # 88-00-9000 (universal pocket)

Tools:

screwdriver (phillips and flat)
5/16 socket (not necessary but helps)

Time:

15 minutes to 1 hour depending on experience

Step 1: Remove the cigarette lighter and fog light switch plate. I just stuck my thumb in and pulled out. Shouldn't be very hard.

Now unclip the wiring harnesses.

Step 2: Remove the two (2) screws holding the AC controls and Radio in the dash. This is where the 5/16 socket will help you to break the screw loose. After the first time these screws will come off with a screw driver very easily.

Step 3: Removing the AC controls and Radio

You can use a flat head screw driver to gently break the clips loose on your dash. Be careful not to gouge your dash.

Now unhook all the wiring harnesses from the back of the AC controls and Radio.

Next take your whole AC unit and radio inside. Why work in the heat or cold when you can be comfortable inside, right?

Step 1: Take the knobs off the AC. They just pull right off.

Step 2: Unscrew the back of the AC controls. There are three screws.

http://img175.echo.cx/img175/9617/undo5go.jpg

Step 3: Mount your aftermarket radio in the bottom slot. I took the radio bracket off too. It has four (4) screws around the outside edges.

Most Pioneer, Alpine, and Eclipse mount right up to the side ISO holes. Screw it in tight.

Next we are going to mount the pocket. This is the Metra 88-00-9000 universal pocket. It comes with directions for Toyota, Nissan, Volvo, etc. but no Honda directions. I used the Toyota mounting brackets.

Step 1: Screw the bracket into the side of the pocket with the supplied screws.

http://img60.echo.cx/img60/3695/whichone3kt.jpg

Step 2: Now mount the pocket to the stock metal bracket (with supplied screws) where the radio used to be.

http://img60.echo.cx/img60/60/pocket0px.jpg

The pocket will only have 1 screw slot that fits. So, I took and screwed in the extra screws to give the pocket some stability. Now the pocket rests on the screw I just screwed in the side.

Step 3: Mount the stock bracket back up the the AC control and Radio panel from the dash. Wiggle it a little to get it back to the stock holes if the fitment is tight.

Step 4: Put it all back together in reverse order.
Remount your AC control with the three (3) screws you took off.
Put your knobs back on.
Go back outside and plug all the AC harnesses up and the radio harness.
Slide it all back into the dash.
Screw in the two (2) screws at the bottom of the AC/radio bracket.
Plug up the fog light and cigarette lighter plug.
Push the plate back on.
Go inside and show your mom/GF/friends how handy you are!!!

Now go enjoy a cold :_beer: !!!!!

I did this to my car, it does reduce the glare signifigantly and also makes the deck easier to reach.

Excellent mod.

Also if you have a pop out screen its farther away from the heating vents so thats a major +

Man! This looks great, but I have the older one piece kit from way back in 01 and I don't feel like getting a new one. It has the slightly smaller pocket on the bottom.

Very well written! Thorough
