hesitation on start up

2002 lx, Not all the time, but when I go to start up the starter turns, and the engine never fires. Turn the key back, try it again, usually by the 2nd/3rd time it starts up, and exhaust seems fine when it does this, burns normal. Not sure if the starter is already going bad or what!

Did you check your batteries?? Its most prob your batt or the spark plugs. My car have the same problem, got it check by a dealer, and they said it was the battery that was causing the problem. Still havent change it yet though.

Take out the key, then re-insert it and try to start up again. Sometimes the Immobilizer system gets confused.

sometimes your motor wont' start up on the first try...but if it starts everything is good. If it happens like everytime you try to start your motor then you may have a problem other then that your all good.

I have an '01 civic... same problem takes about 3-4 turn SOMETIMES to start up. Or when it's winter and your engine is cold sometimes could take up to 5-6 turns.... but it still starts either way.. not a HUGE issue I think.

I asked the one of the service advisors, and he said that it is common, esp in the newer Civic's and the CRV's he said. Its like someone said, the immobilzer gets confused.

Cool, wish I saw this thread before. Sounds like the post above will solve my issue of not starting sometimes, funny though that after 2.5 years it starts happening to me. Hopefully my starer isn't going bad, I know it's not the battery since its still good, might be my sparkplugs though.

I have a 2002 EX and every now and then it doesn't want to turn over. I figured out that if you pump the gas a couple of times while trying to start it...vrrrooom...it starts. I know you shouldn't do that with fuel injection, only carbs, but hey it works! It just kinda pisses me off seeing how I bought it Nov. of 2002 and it's only got 8k on it. I thought small stuff like that isn't supposed to happen for at least 20k or 30k. Oh well.

Like he said, just turn it to on, but wait for a few seconds to turn it over. If it hasn't been started for a long time (like overnight), let the fuel pump get some fuel through the lines first. You'll hear it...a slight motorized whirr before you turn it over. Actually...it's hard to describe. I don't hear it so much as I hear it STOP...like I notice the absence of a particular whirr before I notice the actual whirr. Hard to describe. Try it.
