Question please explain EX VTEC to me

Can someone point me to a link or just explain to me how VTEC works, specifically in the EX engine? As I understand it the VTEC kicks in at a certain RPM to improve engine performance. Does that mean below that RPM it performs just as well as the non-VTEC (LX) engine and the improvement is only noticeable on the higher end? At what RPM does the valve timing change?

Or am I totally missing the point?

Great link! Thanks!

So at around what RPM does the alternate timing kick in on the SOHC VTEC Civic EX? And is low RPM performance pretty much the same as the LX? The "misconceptions" page doesn't seem to get that far.

PS- I like your wheels.

If I recall correctly from reading on this forum, it's anywhere from 3,200 rpm to 4,300 rpm, not sure though.

After doing Boilermaker1's VTEC light DIY I see my VTEC kick in as early as 2500rpms.

everyone will give you a different answer as to when it kicks in. however. you can really hear and feel a difference (in my car with an intake, so you can hear it), starting at about 4,500.

now if you think your not likely to rev your honda that high, at cruising speeds on the highway in 5th an ex is at nearly 4,000rpm anyway. They're built to rev. If you want to have fun driving you'll be between 4500 and 7000 for that period of fun, cuz otherwise, it's more than just a slow car.
