alternator?

hope you guys can answer a question for me. I read that you can put a switch on the field of your alternator to turn of the drag when needed. this could possibly free up some horse power when you want. Is this possible, will this hurt anything? If all good please make a DIY thanks.

i think the only way you can turn off the drag of the alternator is to figure out a way to disengage its belt. sounds like a complicated DIY

Humm, I wonder if fitting a AC type clutch would be a option, and if it really would make any difference.

you would get what. perhaps 2 hp tops on a good day if you did that. and how long will the car run with the alternator turned off, not very. my cable came loose and my car went all of about 2 blocks with out the alternator and broke down. I had to call a friend to get a jump. and even then its a tight fit to get anything in the engine bay in that area. I wouldn't do it, sounds like trouble.

Its going to be tough to do. If you are worried about parasitic loss just scrap your ac and whatever sound you have in your car. Probably bigger gains for less of the hassel and it does not cost anything to pull things out.
