which tires for 17inch rims?

just wondering what you guys think are the best tires for a set of 17inch rims. I've called many places and they say a 205/45/17 is better for our cars(saying that 40 is too small), or use a 205/40/17. It seems that running a 45 would be safer from potholes. What do you guys think?

Definatly go with 205/45/17

It does not comprimise your driving and the spedo stays the same...

Personally, 17" rims slow our cars down a bit...I am switching back to 15's

I'm actually planning on getting a set soon, just asking around what the best tire setup would be.

205/45/17 the best bet...

215/45/17 will give you a plushier ride, but your car will be sitting a bit higher.

215/45/17 all the way. may not look quite as nice as the 40 profile but pays off by protecting your rims from potholes a lot better. i had 40 profile tires on my last set of rims and ended up denting the lip on two of them within the first 2 days of use. i've since sold them and bought new rims running 45 profile rubber and i haven't dented the rims yet, and trust me, i've hit some good sized potholes too.

215/40/17 yes, but i don't think many brands produce 205/45/17, that's an odd size.
