Moonroof leaks
Moonroof leaks
I have a 2001 Civic EX coupe and during heay rains the headliner around the sunvisors and light group gets very wet. It gets so wet that it drips down on to the gear shift. I took it to the dealer and they said it would cost $117 to clean out the drain tubes, they said that one of the tubes was clogged with debri. I thought that was extreme since the car is still under factory warrenty but they insisted that it wouldn't be covered under warranty since it's not a factory defect. I went to another dealer and they said the drain tubes were fine. Don't know what is causing the problem and it is still leaking. I know that the moonroof is designed to let in rain water into the catch tray and down through the tubes, but is anybody else experiencing the same? It is driving me crazy I have to keep a towel under my seat to wipe of the gear shifter when I get in the car after it rains.
I have 22,000 miles on the car but the first dealer I went to said it wouldn't be coverd under warranty because it wasn't a factory defect, they said I had leaves or other debri clogging the drain tubes and that was causing the catchtray to over flow. I thought they were trying to rip me off and went to another dealer for a second opinion and they said that the drain tubes were fine and said that it is very unlikely that is the cause of the leak and would have to take out the headliner and run it through the car was to find out were the leak is coming from. The good thing is that it will be covered under warranty but the bad thing is that their going to be taking my interior apart. Does anybody else's moonroof let water into the catchtray? Beacause Honda said that it was designed to let water in. You can actually put your hand between the mooroof and catchtray during heavy rains and feel it dripping. Thanks for your reply

Yes, all hondas have the catchtray with the drains. They aren't sealed on the exterior. That's why it's always dirty in the trac area when the roof is open. The drains could be clogged but it is highly unlikely at such a young age unless you always park under a tree or something.
The roof doesn't seal with sunroof on the exterior of the car. YOu can tell that there is a groove all the way around it where water and debris can get in.
Also, open the roof and look at the sides of the area where the front of the sunroof fits. You will see the drains. You could try running a coat hanger down them to feel for an obstruction. Sounds like the dealer has already checked that though....Must not be sealed from the interior side somewhere.
