pinging (knocking) engine

err. what cause this?

I think my engine is doing it.

its making the *dong dong dong* noise...

i haven't been driving it hard. not really.

I know I'm a bit pass the oil change... about 2,000 miles pass my usual every 3,000 miles

but that shouldn't cause it. normally its something like a hot spot in the cylinder, too low an octane fuel and ignition timing being off are other causes.

I know its not good. lol. if thats what I'm getting. although there seems to be diff. ones..

I dont hear it while accelerating.. only when I stop driving after like a long 30 mile drive and turn off the engine. then I'll hear something... it sounds like... well, literally sound like knocking and pinging... lol.

okay i should stop laughing cuz my piston might be burning to shread right about now...

any input?

again. am I hearing what I think I'm hearing? cuz I'm under the impression that pinging occurs when er... you engine is actually on... not when u shut it off.

pinging/knocking will only occur when the motor is running. from your sig it says cali, but just a thought, my exhaust "pings" sometimes after a long drive and usually only when it's cold. It is the metal contracting and expanding so if you have an after market exhaust it might be something to look into. I can't really distinguish where the noice is actually emminating from because it just echo's throughout but it is definitly the exhaust. Im not sure if you are hearing it in your engine bay, if that is the case it could be something else contracting and expanding. If your motor is off, and your not throwing a CEL then it couldn't be a knocking problem. good luck.

actually, that's your catalytic converter... it sounds like someone is crumpling aluminum foil or something under your engine bay, right? Nothing to worry about at all, perfectly normal. Particularly after hard driving this will happen.

oooh yeah now that I think about it, its more likely to be a exhaust issue... sounds like something is dripping sorta onto metal... yeah it happens sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't.

I guess I'm just getting paranoid.

thanks guys.

A co-worker of mine had this happen in a car he adjusted the timing on, he put Premium gas in his car and it was fine. After a while he was tired of paying for expensive gas so he adjusted the timing back to normal. Hell, for all I know he's a liar, but he tells the same story today as when I first heard it a few years ago.

At any rate, maybe your timing is off?!?

plus, when I turn off my car.. come on, I dont stick around and check it out.. I get my butt in the house.

:P

Talked about it in the VIP (Vehicles Issues/Problems) section. Do a little search there...

Conclusion:
-Most likely you need to put 87 octane from another fuel company (76, Shell, etc)
-If that doesn't help, put 89 for 2 gas tanks...
-If that doesn't work either, shaaaaaat...haha

I get the knocking noise too with Chevron 87... i put 89 and it disappears. (not completely, but noticeably)

ooh yeah I forgot we got a VIP forum. heh. my fault.

yeah I read something like that too.. i'll try it out..

its weird I've been using 76 instead of Arco. which is what I usually use. lol.

that and chevron. maybe I'll go back to chevron.

Could also be a problem with the EGR valve. Those things will cause a car to ping and get crappy milage. They're only on a D17A2 engine.

I don't think it has anything to do with the gas. Don't all cars make little popping noises and such after you turn them off? Seems like I have always heard cars doing that....I have no clue as to what makes those noises though...I just don't see how it could be pinging due to the octane if it occurs when the engine is OFF...if that is the case

After reading Captian posts I was under the impression that the pinging noise happened when he drove, then he heard a different noise after he shut it off. ?????????? I guess now that I look at it I'm a bit confused.

You know, I don't think I have ever heard actual "pinging" from a running engine that's using too low an octane level.

Now that this pinging issue has been brought up again, what the heck does pinging sound like anyways? Does it sound similar to valves which are not properly adjusted?

Or does it sound more similar to a car cooling down after it's been turned off?

TEST: reply

I think that the ping noise is the same noise as a car with low octane fuel. A car with a bad EGR valve will do the same thing, but the computer will compinsate for it and the car won't seem to drive any different. The only noticable thing is bad fuel milage. I've replaced many EGR's in my day but most were vacuum controlled and the computer just monitored the exhaust gasses. Just my babbling 2¢

Hey my car pings when I go uphill. Using 87 Octane fuel. Anything I should be worried about?

Ashock, do you have a manual tranny? If you do just down shift to the next gear on a hill, and the ping will go away. If you have a auto it should down shift on its own. But don't worry about the slight ping if you get it going up a hill, it won't hurt anything.

i have been reading in a webpage that if you advance a cam gear too far, you will knock on regular gas, so use premium like what i do, eh better gas mileage too

Higher octane gas will not give you better gas milage, infact you might get less. Its one of the biggest misconceptions of high octane gas. Higher octane was developed to reduce valve ping under heavy loads, like punching the trottle from a start, passing, or hauling. It doesn't even increase horse power.

yeah i have auto
when it kicks down the ping is gone

yes higher octane fuel will only help with pinging
it makes you feel "oh i'm paying more money for better fuel so it'll increase hp and milage". NOPE! But the car does run better.
