The funny thing is... the ignorance level reminded me of how some people act on this site towards a car that's NOT a Honda Civic that's believed to be a lower "quality" car.
I decided to take a look at all posts that were marked 1-3 stars out of 5. Didn't bother looking at any 4-5 star ones because I wouldn't be surprised about what they'd say. (Especially for the fact that I'm one owner who hasn't had a major problem with the car.)
Well, from what appears to be:
Honda's quality is slipping... at least with the Civic.
The... ignorance... the hatred... as I'll mention again.
The negative points sound stronger than the positive.
It's true that automotive recalls on domestic cars get more publicity than imports.
Most interesting post:
Read the November Car&Driver comparison test of 10 compact sedans. Guess what?
the Civic LX came in 5th place. After driving one lately, I'd say they were being generous. Very harsh ride. Engine makes more noise than power. Quality control seems to be slipping. Very mediocre car. But they do run forever. Even if they beat and bore you to death along the way. And who cares if they hold together for 150,000+ miles. Who keeps any car that long anymore?
Go look.
Oh, and I am happy with my car. Although it's only one small source of people's rating for our cars, too bad Honda seems to be dropping the ball with one of their best selling cars. It made me curious to what people think on this site about Honda's track record especially if you've owned more than just a 7th Generation Civic.

I don't take advice on cars from yahoo or msn (they seem to give similar car reviews).
considering they originally had the S2000 listed as a 5 speed manual transmission and that it was FWD. It took us a YEAR to get them to fix that. haha

Thats why I like Hondas and most bland looking cars.
I don't want a car "customized" straight from the factory because that means everyone will have one.
Okay, I don't know where Im going with this now
The bland hondas seem to be a good platform to start modding (mostly the looks).
I do wish Honda bumped up the power slightly.

Well, having owned 6 hondas and my sister owning 3 civics, I'd say honda is what it always has been. I never had any illusion that honda was the best car in every category. No manufacturer can claim that position as it's impossible. I have always viewed honda as having bullet-proof reliability and durability.
I don't think anything is slipping. Say that about the accords, the cr-v, the pilot, the odyssey....try saying those models and tell me honda is slipping. I would say they "slipped up" and skinned the hiny a little but the way the current gen is selling, I am not sure anyone has noticed. I think the rattles in the civic is the major problem. I would have bought a vw if I wanted rattles.
Anyhow, if you set out to find something on the net to prove a feeling in your gut, you will find it. People hear a few others talking about problems with their civics and then all of a sudden, a sunvisor making a noise becomes another testament to their friend's comments.
Also, MOST people do not vocalize their positive experiences. People that have bad experiences are bitter and want to tell the whole world. These are the ones that you find writing those reviews and crying out for attention....reminds me of the anti-war protesters. They want to believe that they are in the majority, but in fact, they are not. (In US) Yes, there are some problems but in the majority, honda is a tough cookie to beat no matter which way ya look at it.
Oh, and wasn't the civic the best selling compact in america last year? It was either '01 or '02, or both. I don't think anything is slipping. It may just be that Honda is on such a pedestal that people expect the cars to be perfect.
oh #2...some got lemons and say that honda as a whole is goin down hill. I answer with my aunt smoked until she was 90 and died of natural causes....there is always the exception(s).

I have to agree that Honda screwed it a little with the 2k1 civic, but they have been fixing the quirks and 2k3s seem to be really good cars. I rode in a friend´s 2k3 and it felt different from my car, no rattles, no bouncy suspension.
But overall I still think it is a really good car. Mine has been very reliable and compared to my sister in law´s same year, similar mileage focus, my civic has "aged" a lot better than the Focus. Her car feels like it´s a 5 year old car, mine feels like a 2 year old.

You think Hondas are bad?
I had a 2000 VW Golf 2.0. Now there is a car that is way overpriced and not nearly as reliable as a Honda. Someone said that Hondas are good because they are reliable and are a basis for modding. That is one reason why so many enthusiasts mod Hondas. Also, i agree with the fact that factory appearance packages are too "cookie cutter". Although I wouldn't mind having sport tuned engine, suspension and what not...these are Civics...not EVO's or WRX's.
There was a good thread I read on VWVortex once. They mentioned that VW has built a car (at least the MKIV) that has "perceived" quality. That is they use slightly nicer plastic for interior, closer panel gaps, and Recaro seats. But, all that doesn't matter if there blowing coilpacks all over the place....which is going on now. One of there slogans is "i'd rather push a VW, than drive a Honda". Doesn't make much sense to me when your spending $20k+ on a VW hatchback. I'd rather be able to drive my "boring" Honda than have to wait at the dealer all the time. The VP of something for VW said that some of the "lemons" that Consumer Reports evaluated could have been "monday Cars". That is the workers are too hung over and tired from the weekend off to work on Monday, thus making shoddy cars. That not something I would want my car maker to be saying in public.
Just to be fair, all car company's make good and bad cars...even Honda.

I like my civic....its fast enuff to avoid soccer moms, has enuff parts so i can set it apart from the crowd, cheap on gas and looks pretty damn good.....i wish i could afford more of a car but im happy with what i have for now....
ahh whatever... who gives a shet what the "critics" say.
all i know is that i've had my car since dec.2001 and i have had no problems w/ it (aside from the ABS light which honda fixed for free along with a free wash)
so the critics can spew out as much biased reviews as they want but im sastisfied with my civiy.

If I had the chance to go back in time and use the money on the Civic + $2000 more, what car would I buy? After looking over the different cars of that price range several times and comparing them, I would still get the Civic.
I bought my DX in December 2002 and trust me, nothing compares to the civic. I don't know about 2001's or anything, but the ride is good, the look is sporty as long as it is a coupe, and the car accelerates well for a 4 cylinder. I drive MANY miles to work and have tracked my gas mileage since new. I have averaged 36.94 miles per gallon and have driven as much as 500 miles on a tank full of gas (I filled it all the way up the filler tube). There is no better car in it's class - Period.
Peace,
Peno

Honestly i think the civic coupe looks pretty nice, but i never did
get a chance to own one. I did however own a 2k1 civic sedan - and really, it's looks are appalling and tasteless. Protege 5 in yellow is a chick magnet compared to the sedan, and the stuff you get for a price similar to that of a civic far outweighs the reliability issue - they are close enough.

Civic has better gas milage and that's a given.
But the Pro 5 comes with 16" alloys, 4wheel disc brakes + abs, power everything, fog lights,
more room, same ride height, better suspension, better stock tires, more hp/torque (yes it weighs a bit more), excellent gas milage/reliability for about the same if not a bit more than a civic. I don't think the Civic is the best car in it's class.
Between a civic sedan and and Protege, I'd pick the Mazda without even thinking. The Ferio is a pretty bubbly shaped, and not appealing to me. I think the 7th gen coupe is one of the nicest designs out there. EvAR!
I've been in a Protege and I like the ergonomics of the civic more. Everything about the placement of buttons, cupholders is so well thought out. This is the first car that I've been in that can hold supersized cokes... that impresses me very much. Quite frankly it beats the ergonomically monstrous 7 series i-drive, and the quagmire of buttons in a Mercedes (for simple functions mind you, not even considering the extra options).
All these people talking about slow ...I have no problem passing cars on the freeway, and frankly there's no need for a car to be faster than that. I bet 1% of BMW 3 series owners push their cars to the utmost limits. There's enough torque and enough handling to make the car fun, and not a total bore like a Corolla.
Yes there probably are better cars out there, but they're not better by much. When it comes down to it, the intangible goodness of the car is what compels people to buy them, not reviews, not numbers. And this car has it.

Honda is a great company -- the civic is a good economy car which can be done up nicely - However, Nissian and Mazda are also becoming big sellers in the Economy Car category and with more styling and horsepower .... But Honda is lucky to have the reputation of reliability

when i was looking for a car i test drove a corolla, a sentra, and the civic. i wasnt even considering a huyndai or mazda (altho in retrospect i should have tested out the mazdaspeed).
anywho...the civic was the best car of the ones i drove. corolla just felt plastic and sluggish, the sentra was a bit better, but still had a sloppy feel to the interior. the corolla lagged on accelleration (altho it was an auto). the sentra 5-speed was ok, kinda tight clutch, a little sluggish too, but i wasnt really trying to open it up with the 300lb dealer in the car.
the civic has great style, its peppy, the shifting is pretty precise, and its just a comfortable car. i knew i wanted it right when i got in and shifted into second. im not sure what else car&driver tested, but it was definitely not the same level trim as the LX.
mazdaspeed and srt-4 or spec-v might be in the same price range, but they are highter trim cars. and what you might gain in power you compromise in other things im sure.
im really happy with the civic. im pretty sure if they bring the 2.0L sedan that they have in asia to the US im gonna stick with the civic over the WRX even.
