side marker rust prevention

i think i finally got enough ***** to take my fenders off, and cut em up to fit my smoked-clear side markers! unfortunately, its not a circular hole . but im gonna give it a shot anyway- i havent had one DIY go wrong yet, so.... anyway, what can i used to seal the cut im going to make? the side marker has rubber trim, so im not too worried about it, but id like to be on the safe side. i once read, that touch up paint will do the trick, i have some- but i dont think thats gonna be enough to prevent rust, or am i wrong?

thx!

it will eventually tho, maybe have someone put touch up paint then maybe some clear coat over the hole. Thats what i would do shouldnt cost more then 20 bucks to get it sealed, cheaper if you got it alone

Your best bet at preventing rust on a cut is to first hit it with some etching primer (or self-etching or metal etching, its all the same) then put some touch up paint on it. the etching primer will form a good bond with the metal, and the paint will provide a more weather resistant finish.

Yeah, primer and touch-up paint. Actually any kind of paint will work. I think touch-up paint will work in and of itself it you apply it on a very clean surface. Also, apply several layers. I think that will work nicely. At least I hope it does 'cause it's what I've been doing on all of the holes i drill into the sheet metal. A couple for the rear sway bar for example, and a couple for the front chassis stifferener off of a 2002 for example, and some more up front for my Tsunami bumper support brackets. Yeah, for example. Hehe...
