Clutch wear question...

I was just wondering how much doing stupid stuff like popping or dropping the clutch, power shifting etc wears the clutch or any other components. Also, if you have had your clutch replaced, how many miles did your first one last and how much was the new one (parts & labor)?

Well, I don't think power shifting will wear your clutch much at all since to do it properly you have to shift at the exact right RPM. Dropping your clutch is bad for both the clutch and the axles. I think I put alot of wear on my clutch since I always downshift all the way to 2nd while braking. I'm at 18K mi. and haven't noticed any slippage. It definately doesn't feel nearly as good as when it was new, but it's still good. I'm just glad I'm not an auto driver (CVT excluded) with all the problems they have.

popping the clutch, power shifting ect....will all add up. with power shifting since you are quickly shiffting, you are not really wearing the clutch, however, you are putting alot of stress on the flywheel and the clutch, that could results in shattering either of them. Also, power shifting puts un-needed stress on the engine mounts (could snap on off) as well as the drive train (tranny, drive shaft).
treat your car like you would treat your women, with respect and it will last a long time. my current 2k1 has 58k on it, runs like new, still orrignal brake pads and purrs like a kitten.
my old 1979 volvo 242DL had 300k on it, and get this, orriginal clutch, and still ran like new

As far as #s, the average # of miles I hear people are at when they need to replace their clutch is at 50k but it always depends on how you drive... if someone else drives your car, then also how they drive, too.

50k is just a wee bit low imo. You would have to drive pretty hard to wear out a clutch at 50k.

Typically, from talking to honda techs over the yrs, honda clutches go at about 80k-100k. That's in general.

Now, my 93 accord had 150k on it and the clutch was just fine but I was the one driving it. heh

My wife's 91 accord had 157k on it and still had the oe clutch and she drove that car hard..

It really depends on the driver...

clutches are not weak part of a drive train, if treated right it should last life time of a vehicle. My previous car was 87' celica had 260k miles on it with original clutch. I thought it was about time for a new clutch, when my mechanic took out the original clutch he said clutch still had alot of miles to go and sure enough when I replaced it anyways car felt SAME. At least 50% of my driving is done on street, i think key to long lasting clutch is how you shift. There's a huge difference between driving hard and abuse, having a right technique will make clutches go long way.

This guy is right, the clutch should last the life of the car if not abused. I had 500,000km on a VW diesel with the original clutch and it was fine. Keeping the cables in adjustment is also critical. (Not for a hydraulic system)

Heh, I'll keep those #s in mind cuz here I've only heard say twice people needing to change their clutches at 50k... one of them I know... can't say he's the calmest driver.
