2k1 Speed Governor
In the thread about the 300zx there were remarks about the govners. I'm not saying it was smart... but after I got my intake, with everything but the aem cold air stock i hit 133 on I-10, after about 90 + seconds or so i hit 134, after about another minute or so i decided that I had infact topped the car out and slowed down. Is there a possibility that my speedometer is a few mph off? It doesn't seem so, and my tach is at 3 on the dot corresponding to the owner's manuel shift pattern.... I topped it at 134 on my 01 dx. Maybe noone knows about the dx, but I swear that's what it showed.
Yeah, and does anybody try to n/a there 2k1? I'd like to get an eqiuvalent to crower rods, valve, springs and retainers, full internals and bore with sleeves on je pistons. Does anyone know where to find it for our car? I'm Complacent at this point.... I've only really found pretty common things for the EM. Please advise, thanks.

Ive had my needle at 137-138mph...keep in mind i have 17in. rims...so there is an extra 4% on top of that...so i was really going 143-144mph. Call BS i dont care, i know what i saw, my friend was there too.
Cheers

Look at the User's Manual for your car. It has a rev limiter on it(does that still apply for mt's too?) so we don't do anything particularly stupid to our cars and wreck the engine. Well more than we do racing anyway. I'm sure there'll be an ECU mod/some kinda bypass out there soon.
if you don't mind me asking, where did you people take your cars up to these speeds? Not on open roads, i hope
Bad VtecDude.. Bad!
well when I had my 2001 civic with gude head, hp race header, greddy catback, aem pulleys, CAI, lowered...etc. I could only hit 128 before it redlined so I call BS on the 144mph that means you would be at about 8000rpms BOOM
with a smaller diameter tire than stock, you would be going slower than what your speedo is telling you.
so if smaller your speedo could be telling you 145, but actually youd be running like 130 or so, and factory speedos have a good chance of being off alot at those speeds.

Oh I believe you both. I was doing 130 and only at 5.3rpm. So I know our cars, or my car, is/are capable of much more. Its almost as though the tach was limited, not the speedo???
One more thing, the faster your go, the less accurate your speedometer is, it will end up varying by about 1-5% (on the faster side, so if it says 130, your actually doing less) depending on the car. The most extreme case of this i've heard is a guy I know has a 996 C4S and he takes it to the track and his was off by about 12mph so he was going 130 and it said 142. This is sometimes caused by different wheel sizes as mentioned earlier, and other times it's just the car.

If you have a fat tire on a big rim, the wheel is spinning slower. Common sense says that the speedometer is based on how fast the wheel spins, right? Right. Smaller wheel spins faster, bigger wheel at same speed spins slower. The smallest sized tire is a 215/45/17 for the speedo to even begin reading the wheel spins too slow.

I was reading the manual and it mentions a governer for the HX CVT trim of 112 miles per hour, Since it doens't say anything else about limits under the manual or automatic i would guess their isn't one. Though it does mention a rev limiter under all the transmission types. It's kinda vague it just says "The red zone", i've never pushed my car that far because their's no reason too, the highest I've ever gone is 6500 RPMS, I beleive it redlines at 6700 or so. Also, remember that a blown engine as a result of over-reving isn't covered under warrenty...

The diameter of the wheel and tire together IS smaller than stock (for example a 205/40/17 is smaller than a 185/65/15) and with that being said... you're saying that while this wheel is apparently spinning faster due to it being smaller means that the speedo is going to tell you you're going slower???? Calculate it yourself and show me the comparison of a stock EX size VS. a 205(215)/40/17. You've definitely got it backwards my friend.
bigger dia, your doing 65, but your speedo is telling you that you are running 60. hope this clears it up.
ok i will agree to the first post off those speeds and the post about tire sizes! But i have redlined my car in fifth gear(down a hill and with juice), but i hit 144-145 then my shift light came on, the hill ended and i slowed down but i have 215/40/18 on my car so my speedo should be a little off but it was still hauling as*! Just so yall know the speedo doesnot work on tire spin it is transmission spin! Our cars also have computer controled speedos, Honda can hook your car to a computer and tell you your top speed and highest rpms and driving habits! Its true call honda and ask! They tried to tell me that my driving habits void my warranty! It didnot work but they tried!
a couple times my limiter on my 02 lx 5 spd kicked in at 112 mph with people in the car, then one time i was alone and it kicked in at 115 mph so i dunno, but it def. kicked in at both speeds, i felt the fuel cut off, then the car slowed, then it put fuel back to th engine.

This has been discussed several times in the past, and probably will be discussed many times in the future. *sigh*
I personally have done 131 in my bone stock manual EX coupe. That speed was drag limited, in other words, the engine no longer had enough power left to push the car through the air resistence. I still had room to go on the tach, so if I found a long enough downhill run, I'm sure I could go faster.
Going 130 on the stock Firestones makes me a little nervous though. They're H-rated, so they're good for 130mph, but handling with them sucks really badly.
I did these speeds more than once on the back roads between here (Socal) and Nevada. Straight, pretty much flat and no other cars at all.
The EX trim has a rev limiter (I've hit it once or twice in 1st gear), but I have not heard of anyone hitting a speed limiter (claims of 145mph) in the EX trim. I know my '99 DX cut off at 120mph, and there was no doubt when it kicked in. None of this, "Oh, the governor kicked in because I couldn't go any faster." When the fuel cutoff kicks in, it's a pretty violent deal. The first time it happened I thought I broke my car. After that I got used to it.

So to recap: The EX trim has a rev limiter, but apparantly no speed limiter.

i got mine to 134 with 3 nicks till redline on a stock civic. there was no one on the road. It was scary when i hi the brakes. major vibration. I got my boys GSR up to 143. Fun Fun Fun. but i will probably never do it again. once is enouh for me.
I've hit 133 or so with room to go in my Ex. But I'm on 17" wheels. I stayed at that speed for about 1 mile so I'm guessing the terminal velocity in on a flat road is about 135. I sure going downhill you could go a little faster but at high speeds are cars are exactly "aerodynamic"
