*PLEASE READ* EX's are EASY to break into....

and actually, there is no breaking in involved. i just found out today that even with the alarm on, if the drivers power door lock switch is used, meaning you unlock the door from the inside using the switch, the alarm WON'T go off!!!!
well, you might be wondering, how do you i know? today, i locked my keys in my car ( actually, in the trunk ), so i call a lock smith to help me open the car. i dont think i should explain how this is done on the internet, but damn, it took this guy 30 seconds to open the drivers door, and the alarm didn't go off.
as far as i know, only the EX's have that power door switch, so the EX owners need to be careful.

should i post how this was done? i'm definately getting an alarm installed, cause this is just plain dumb on honda's part. i just thought i would warn you guys.

Are you sure you have an alarm and not just keyless entry?? Because that kinda defeats the whole idea of having an alarm installed.

There's been times where I stop and take my keys out the ignition and end up sitting in my car for a few minutes for whatever reason and the passive alarm kicks in. When I try to open the door, the alarm goes off. Did the guy grab your key and turn off the alarm first?

yep, i have the factory alarm, not just keyless entry.

i locked the keys in the trunk, my car was locked, i opened the trunk with the key itself, and accidentally dropped the keys in the trunk, and closed the lid. but my car was locked, i never opened it.

i even tested it out afterwards, i sat inside my car, closed the door, locked it with the key fob, and used the power switch to unlock the doors, the doors unlocked, and i opened the door, no alarm sounded. BUT, if i tried to open the door by manually pushing the lock switch up, then the alarm sounds.

Isnt this normal though? I'm guessing that when you hit the switch to unlock the doors your also disabling the alarm.

Wait... So the lock smith opened your door with the power door locks switch? How in the world did he do that? Either way, if that's what he did, why would you expect it to go off. If you're in your car and you need to unlock the passenger side, don't you just hit the power unlock anyways? It would suck if the alarm went off everytime you used the switch.

THen something's not hooked up right, I have the factory alarm and the only way to disarm it is to use the remote. If you hit the power lock switch on the door with the windows down and open the door while the system is armed it WILL go off. Same goes for the trunk, even if you use the remote. I think the dealership that installed your alarm screwed something up, I installed mine myself and everything works as it should. Get someone to look at that.

You can easily test this. Park with the windows down.
Get out of the car and shut the door. You will see the
car automatically lock.

Stick your hand in and pull up the unlock switch unlocking both
doors and no alarm goes off.

You need to upgrade your alarm then bud. I have a Viper 300ESP and my alarm goes off if you just touch the car. And I have tried to unlock my car while inside and try to get out with the alarm on. As soon as I unlock my door the alarm goes off. Time for an upgrade.

people with EX's and the factory alarm try this:
go to your car, and get in, have someone lock the doors with the keyfob ( enabling the alarm ). now, unlock the door from the inside ( the power lock switch thats next to the door handle ), if your alarm goes off, then my car has a problem, if it doesn't, then we all have a problem.
all you need is something a hanger, you bend it a certain way, and trust me, you can unlock the power lock switch from the outside within 30 seconds.
i just tested out my dad's maxima, its a 2k1, and it DOES sound the alarm if i try to unlock the doors from the inside with the power lock switch.

i find this discouraging, that someone can open my car door, within 30 seconds ( most likely less ), and the alarm wont go off, wtf is the point of the damn thing then? i'm gonna go to the dealership tomorrow, show them, see if they encountered this before, maybe there is a fix.

please, can anyone else confirm this on there car?

i dont know about u, but from the inside...u can lock it with the switch and the alarm will be "armed" but if u push up on the switch...it will still be armed...up until u open the door thats when the alarm will come on. I think the description u gave us was just keyless entry.

K I have the 1.7EL and I just did a test. (note I have factory Honda Alarm that came with car) If I flip the unlock switch and open the door, the alarm is disarmed meaning there's no alarm!!! WTF That's just ****ed up man. I think it's suppose to be designed so that if you are in the car and u accidentally armed your car but you wanna get out, then no annoying alarm.

That's so unsafe now.

I dont think it's ****ed up that the alarm doesnt go off..I would expect that hitting the power switch would disarm the alarm..what I DO!! find disturbing is that someone can hit the electric lock switch in 30 seconds. Something should be done to not allow this to happen. If he is putting the hanger in the door...then maybe some kind of doorjam gaurd thing( I know some cars have them...it basically sheilds the inner workings of your door from being jimmied open. Maybe one of our great DIYers can design something.

thank you, all i wanted to hear. it is unsafe, and for those who think its hard to flip the power switch from the outside, its not, i can try and draw a diagram or something in paint that might help you visualize how its done, but again, i dont want to post that here, becuase i dont want the idea to spread to theives.

okay, i have had this incident happen when i first got my angel eyes, i was at a friends house showing him the lights when he decided to close my door, (my alarm activates and locks all the doors when the doors have been shut for 15sec's) and so i had my music on and the lights on and the tow truck guy took 3 hours to get to his house. then all he did to get the door open was to put a wedge in between the window and the door and then he has a new type of slim jim that works with the new civics, its long and then bends upwards and then back down again.. he triped the door lock and the alarm went off. i dont have a factory alarm but if yours disarms when the switch is flipped then ur alarm isnt hooked up correctly. BTW mine is a KARR 4200 alarm with the dual shocksensors and the trunk popper.

thats exactly what the guy did to my car, used that new slim jim thing to unlock the door, but the factory alarm doesn't activate when the power lock switch is unlocked, thats the dumb part. i'm getting a new alarm installed, probably a code alarm 4200. i was actually planning on getting that alarm anyways in the next couple months, but i am DEFINATELY getting it soon, like this week.

Stock alarms suck. Period.

I got the compustar alarm also with a custom perimeter sensor setup ( compustar doesn't come with perimeter) and it has never let me down.

The alarm is NOT supposed to go off you use the power switch inside the car or the door handle. The system is designed to work this way. It's annoying that you can't possibly test it yourself w/o actually prying the door open and what have you.

My 00 accord had the same deal. It's keep you from setting the alarm off on accident.

It makes perfect sense to me. Why would the alarm go off if you hit the power lock button or open the door while it is locked as it triggers the actuator too. Dumb? I don't think so. Cutting the horn wire could probably be done quicker than sticking something through the door.

But yep, It's NOT supposed to as the brain thinks it is YOU that is opening the door.

well, thats the lame part, who sits in a car with the alarm armed? and is this a big problem, people sitting in there cars with the alarm armed, and then unlocking the door with the power switch, setting off the alarm? i dont think so. i'd rather set the alarm off myself by accident rather than have a theif just enter my car without the alarm going off. i'm just glad i found this out, now i can search for a good aftermarket alarm.

would disabling keyless entry fix the problem so that u have to disable the alarm and open the doors manually? and is this for stock alarm on all civics or just ex?

sorry, i didn't know that the alarm arms itself if you are in the car, i dont sit in my car that long when its off, so i wouldn't know.

i was just trying to let people know how easy it was to get into our cars without the alarm even chirping, but there is no reason for you to make fun of me. its not like i posted "why isn't my car fast, i only hit 16's in the 1/4 mile, shouldn't this car with its vtec fly down the track"? NO. i was trying to help people not get jacked, and maybe push people to talk to honda about this situation, or get an aftermarket alarm to protect there hard earned stuff. if you dont care, fine, just dont make me look like some idiot newbie that posted a "can my car beat a ferrari?" question.
