VTEC-E, 12 valves??
Hey, I hear that in the EX trim, it's actually a VTEC-E engine. Which only uses 12 valves when driving at normal RMPs? When it goes into VTEC mode, then it uses 16 valves? true?
(Please don't flame, i know how VTEC works, opening all 16 valves isn't really VTEC, I just want to know if it's true that the car runs with 12 valves until the VTEC kicks in???)

EX has real SOHC VTEC. Both intake valves open just as far on both the low cam and high cam, niether is ever closed when the other is opening. Exhaust valve timing is always the same
HX has 1 intake valve until around 2500, then both kick in, then at 4800, both follow the high cam.
The i-VTEC system in the Si, has 1 intake valve following the primary cam, the other follows a secondary (whimpier) profile. At 2300, the second intake valve switches over to the primary cam profile, and that's all you get.

This is weird...I loged onto Honda.com here's what they say..
Every family needs an overachiever, and the EX Coupe is the Civic's top standout. With a high-performance 1.7-liter, 127-hp VTEC® engine and 15-inch wheels and tires, the Civic EX Coupe is near the top of its class. Take the LX and add to that a power moonroof with tilt feature, an AM/FM/CD audio system with 6 speakers, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and a driver's seat with manual seat height adjustment, and there's no doubt the Civic EX goes above and beyond the call of duty.
I think Honda.com would know more than carpoint

BTW I think the main difference is the camshaft... I took these specs out of my Helm manual.
EX - D17A2 engine
Intake: primary=38.604mm secondary=32.848mm
Exhaust: 38.784mm
HX - D17A6 engine
Intake: primary=38.427mm secondary=32.193mm
Exhaust: 38.784mm
DX/LX - D17A1 engine
Intake: 35.299mm
Exhaust: 37.281mm

I remember in 2001, when my civic was new, Honda advertised the EX as having VTEC-E. This has been posted before, but didn't really get to a definite answer. The final word is when someone takes the engine apart, or contacts honda.......I've been confused for so long!
