I've been tracking Gas Mileage...
2k2 LX auto... 3,200 miles, changed oil @ 3,000 with Valvoline dino 5w-20. No mods.
Tracked mileage last 3 fillups.
314.4 miles / 11.46 gals = 27.43 mpg
316.8 miles / 11.26 gals = 28.13 mpg
292.5 miles / 11.50 gals = 25.43 mpg
These have been my three fillups since 11/30. My '98 Saturn SC2 (1.9 DOHC, auto) consistently got 28-30 mpg. I drive about 70% highway @ 70mph, rpm is at about 2.7k.
I mean... 25mpg? I live in Northern Kentucky, temperatures have been between 30-60F lately. I mean... this gas mileage is not good at all. My car never sees 4,000 rpm, I don't accelerate hard at all... my last fillup was 25.43 mpg with no mods. What the hell am I doing wrong? Gas mileage was a big seller for me on the car.

Check your tire pressure and make sure it's at the recommend psi.
Also, you should see a little increase in mpg as the motor gets completely broken in.
Oh, if you wanted max mpg, you should have bought a manual.

2k2 LX auto. Intake & Exhaust.
Constantly averaging 280 miles with 11 gallons.
California 50% city/ 50% highway ~70 degrees
-------------------------------------------------------------
Are you using windows or AC? I know that both decrease your gas mileage.
Do you warm up your car until it passes the "C" line? Gas mileage is 30-40% efficient (don't ask me where i got that from) when the car is not fully warmed up.
and a random tip: fill gas in the morning, or night only. Gas expands with heat so in the afternoon when you pump like 11 gallons it turns into 10.5 or maybe less during the night.

Gas mileage (at least where I am) tends to decrease in the wintertime (for a few different reasons). In the summers I get around 34-36 mpg. In the winters I get 30-32 mpg. If your gas mileage is still crappy in the summer than something might be wrong.
BTW, my car is a HX CVT and I do about 90/10 (city/highway).

shouldnt of had a oil change in the first place. dealer told me that you should change the oil at 4000 miles and not 3000. they use a special kind of oil that breaks in the engine so you dont have to worry about going easy on it. i think the "break in oil" is a myth. it's no different from the regular oil you put in.
FYI, my MPG was pretty crappy when i only had 3K miles also, and now i get between 35-39 MPG... so just give it some time...

I agree with odyie about the "special oil"
There was a thread about it looooooongggggg time ago and i believe htown or some honda tech told us it was regular oil. That is all.

Check the tire pressures. I use 32 PSI in my 2k1 ex auto (stock). Mileage is 29-32 city, 32-36 hwy. The engine will use more gas when it's cold outside. Mileage should improve when it warms up. Also, you're probably driving up all those hills in the Cincy area!
BTW, my dealer recommended 5,000 mile oil changes. I drive mostly hwy.

Thanks for the tips... I really do hope that the gas mileage improves over time. I also believe that the "starter" oil is nothing but regular oil. I read either Car and Driver or some other article about how it is completely regular oil. I've also read people have changed their oil at 1,000 miles and already have metal flakes and other buildup in the oil. Not too great for a new engine.
I`ve been tracking my Acura 1.7EL (1.7 VTEC Engine) gas mileage since I bought it in April 2001. Here are the figures for 2002 for mixed city/highway (but mostly city) driving:
Jan 2002:8.7 L/100 km = 33 mpg
Feb 2002: 9.0 L/100km = 31 mpg
Mar 2002: 9.2 L/100km = 30 mpg
Apr 2002: 7.7 L/100km = 36mpg
May 2002: 8.2 L/100km = 34 mpg
Jun 2002: 8.0 L/100km = 35 mpg
Jul 2002: 7.7 L/100km = 36 mpg
Aug 2002: 6.9 L/100km = 40 mpg
Sep 2002: 7.9 L/100km = 35 mpg
Oct 2002: 7.8 L/100km = 35 mpg
Nov 2002: 8.2 L/100km = 34 mpg
These figures pretty much are in line with Acura statements.

you know, I have been wondering about the gas milage in my civic lately too. I bought a HX - manual, mainly because of the advertized gas milage. I have NEVER gotten 36/42 or whatever great milage was advertised. I get about 32/38 - and while it ain't bad - its nothing about 4 miles per gallon shy of what I thought I would get. I have changed my oil 2x (myself - no "special" Honda oil - LOL), and changed the air filter 1x - for no improvement. And while I might give her some gas to cut in front of someone from time to time, I don't race from the start. So I'm with Manof Steel here - what's up?

That sounds normal. The advertised MPG is an "average", not a consistant numbers at all. Obviously environmental conditions play a big role here so i guess the advertised mpg works under ideal conditions .
Either way i'm happy with gas mileage (eventhough i only get 30mpg... 02 lx auto)
