Head Work

I was thinking of taking my head to a machine shop to get them to port and polish my head and mill them so I get 10.5 to one compression. I know it will give me some good power, but I want your guy's opinion on if my engine will blow up. Also to get max gain I will be taking my ECU to Jet.

hmm. shouldn't call people names.

but if you're going to go and do those jobs... do you know what they do? and why do you want to lower compression? and how? because last I check porting and polishing ur head doesn't lower the compression ratio... and last I check a simple port and polish job will not blow up an engine...

maybe you should research a bit more before you have these jobs done on your engine... and find out more if the shop you were going to is reputable or not...

No but milling it does. Never experienced head work with an import, so what I would do is find a GOOD speed shop and talk to them, or evan better talk to the good racers in your area and find out where they go, chances are the good ones all go to the same shop.

I'm hoping someone in the know can step in on this thread. I talked with my machine shop this weekend and they're feeling was there weren't enough potential gains to be made with our head. The heads are designed for fuel efficiency and emissions, not high flow. Same with the intake manifold.

That said, has anyone done significant reworking of the heads to see what they are capable of flowing? Im guessing that worked heads and a better intake manifold could be worth 40 hp, but I don't want to pi$$ money away if that's not the case. I've also got the feeling that our intake sucks and we really need a better setup to match any head work we could do or the additional potential flow in the heads would be strangled by the intake.

Any input on this would be appreciated.

Though's are good point's milling the head is a good way to "raise" the compression without changing the pistons, I have a friend that did that to his H22 and is running 13 to 1 lot's of power it's great.

Do not just take it to any machine shop shop.....most places just make holes bigger..

Take it to an experienced speed shop with a flow bench. Also flow isn't the only factor. Air velocity is another to consider. Well ported heads and a 3-5 angle valve job, and a custom intake manifold is good for another 30HP with bolt-on's Any more power requires new cams, and some ECU work. Milling the head on a civic isn't the least bit smart. it really messes with valve clearances. a Better choice would be to call up JEpistons and ask then for the job number for their 11:1 or 10.5:1 compression pistons that xxx99vtec supposedly ordered. I called them before and I know they have the 11:1's they did it before so the pistons are no longer custom. they have the CNC program t make as many as they want.

A good proper port job should cost you at least $750...more likely around $900 for the port work and VJ from a race proven shop. the intake manfold..well read the sticky post at the top of the thread..it's not rocket science to make your own . $900 for head work, $500 for pistons. $150 in parts for the intake manifold

Mohawk, I haven't looked at the stock manifold. Can it be modified or is custom the way to go? I'm interested in what you come up with.

it's plastic..and ut's U shaped...can't be modded...has really really crappy air flow. It's the single biggest power killer in our cars and is the reason our cars don't respond well to mods...

I never cared much for milling a head. It works but its the cheap way of increasing the comp, If you do it to much you have to adjust the cam timing with cam gears. At least if you just decide to change the pistons out you can "keep" cough cough the warrenty. Its kind of hard to try pass your car by the dealer with cam gears on. Rember do it right do it once....screw ups get costly.

hehe. er... I saw pics of it... well, okay, maybe not members, but some shop or club did it... I know there's definitely one out there... there was a pic floating around... they threw on a horizontal intake manifold...
