VTEC-E / cam --- Q's for the experts

I'm realatively new at this.. and I'm positive the I have some misconceptions about certain things... so I thought I'd ask the experts about the internals of the SOHC VTEC-E series in our 7th gens.

First, a little about what I've read:
-they open only 1 of the intake valves in the low-rpm setting
-they then open the other in the high-rpm setting
-timings or opening sizes (not sure of the tech. term for this) of the valves are not changed at all
-the cam is much the same as the regular VTEC's SOHC
-the high-rpm setting kicks in around 2500rpm (as opposed to 5000 or 4500 or around there)

SO, really my main question is:
can this VTEC-E be made into a 'normal' VTEC by simply changing the cam and the low to high changeover rpm????

that said, would you even be able to change the cam timings and opening sizes to something more aggressive without making further changes to the engine (besides the cam)??

and most importantly (if it would work, that is): what sort of performance increases, fuel efficiency decreases could I expect... and would the performance increase even be relevant for the cost of this???

I know there are some ppl on this forum who really know their stuff so thx in advance for the responses.

nah not the hx... the VTEC-E is the type of VTEC in all the 2002 civics (that have VTEC) besideds the Si-R (all of the 1.7L 127-hp I4 ones)

unless ive been misinformed... and reading the posts of other misinformed people on message boards is not really the best way to learn things


EDIT:

ok.. just looking at hondas site now... and it mentions vtec-e only on the hx model... but not on the EX version
im positive that i had read otherwise someplace else before however

crap... looks like all that research for nothin!!!!!!

as far as i know the ex does not have vtec e, just norm vtec

Yeah, you're referring to this article I think: How does it work? SOHC VTEC-E
The answer is "yes" I believe. That is if everything else isn't changed besides that one round cam profile. If the valves aren't changed, the push rods, the rocker arms. If everything is the same for the two intake valves and their corresponding components, then just changing the cam shaft will yield better performance. You would decrease fuel economy and increase performance. Adding more fuel at lower rpm's and changing the VTEC engagement point. Changing the amount of fuel at higher rpm's too. Don't know how much of an increase you would get? It depends on how rich you want to run.

yep grey, thats where i pulled most of the info from

well.. i guess its a good question (even though it doesn't apply to me with my EX)

the type of powergains are probably about 10hp:

the 1.7L SOHC VTEC is said to produce 127
the 1.7L SOHC VTEC-E is supposed to produce 117
so, if you could basically turn it into a regular VTEC I guess you would have and increase of about 10hp
