Block Heater?

Hey people, seems like cold weather is creeping up on us... I've always heard of block heaters but what exactly are they? I heard
that they were necessary on older cars but new cars make them unnecessary. Is it a heater for the oil pan so that the car gets
warmer oil from a cold start?

How do you install a block heater? Would it be necessary to have one if you park outside a lot? The reason I am asking is that last year
I didn't have to share my garage spot with another car but I'm afraid my car might have to reside outside some days...

i believe u have to have some kind of electrical source.
the block heater keeps the engine warm. i dont know why people would want this unless it constantly snowed where they live.
civics heat up really quick.

i belive it installs into the block, i think that there is a plug that you remove and stick that in instead....i believe that it keeps the oil warm, better for starts...but i also belive that you have to PLUG it into regular ac current....

Block heaters install into the engine block and keep the coolant warm. Some of this heat also transfers to the oil and makes the engine easier to start in very cold weather. They come with a cord that you plug into a household outlet. Honda dealers sell and install these so it would be covered under your cars warranty.
