What would cause this? (with pic)

I had my Skunk2 coilovers installed at a shop about a month ago. Last night I was going to put on the camber kit and I found some damage to the threaded sleeve of the coilover. What would cause the spring to rub the sleeve?

btw - this is the driver's side rear and the passenger side is not as bad. The fronts are fine.

I went to the shop that installed them today and the guys there were cool about it. They are replacing them tomorrow for free.

(They are going to see why the coilovers failed first and go from there)

The problem has been fixed. The Skunk2 spring is 1/2" in diameter smaller than the stock spring, so they added a rubber spring cap to the top of spring. The spring is now in place and there to stay.

BTW - Skunk2 is aware of the problem and is sending the caps when needed.
