Would you consider it "stock?" I don't see many OEM body kits on our cars around here... I see them more on Toyotas. Anyhoo, I'm making my car a sleeper but at the same time I do want to make it have a "little" style to it's exterior. It's an okay body kit and the spoiler completes it... but I just want people's opinion if the only thing seen on the outside that's changed would be the OEM kit.

That was exactly something I did NOT want to hear. I have cleared headlights and I can make them stock but I think I don't even wanna touch my headlights again except put orange signal bulbs in. And rims? I'm gonna go with 16s and that'll be it.

I dunno, it was just a thought. Sometimes I wanna go for looks and sometimes I just wanna concentrate on the opposite.

The state of my car now probably does better as a sleeper on the outside than how it'd look. It's just that rims to me on a car is something that doesn't defy the purpose of a sleeper for the fact that changing the rims on a car is just the most common modification anyone does whether it's for looks or performance. Almost the same with dropping the car. I wouldn't care about the cleared headlights as long as they look stock at night... and I dunno. They're just cleared headlights, nothing special to me anymore and it doesn't turn heads unless I have some kind of blue bulbs in them (which I removed). I guess the body kit could be pushing it.

Isn't the definition of a "sleeper", a car that looks stock (or less than stock), but goes VERY fast... don't you own a civic?
If you really want to make your car a sleeper, here is what you will need:

1. a new car with a big engine
2. nothing else

that is all.

If you just put your car back to stock, then how does that make it a sleeper? It is just a stock Civic. In that case, every stock civic is a 'sleeper' -except that it isn't because it is SLOW.

"7thgen + civic + sleeper" can't be used in the same sentence, 'less you have plenty of cash to boot.

Noodle + sleeper can be used in the same sentence. You eat noodles, you get full. Then you sleep!

BUT if you're referring to the Protege 5, the engine is very good for modding. Several turbo kits to choose from that are already in production for the P5, + the new bolt on turbo from mazdaspeed soon to be available. The fs-ze engine parts from japan are compatible in the Pro5.

I have heard that kelly blue book takes 2 things into account when it comes to the price of a used car:

1. Rims
2. Custom stereo

I would assume that since these are the two most popular upgrades to a car, it wouldn't ruin your sleeper status to get custom rims. After all, it just a matter of perception as to what's a sleeper and what's not. It really depends on the dumba$$ next to you whether he thinks you are a threat enough to use his NO2 or not. Maybe they wouldn't try as much if you had no VISIBLE performance upgrades on your car. But it would take a little to catch the attention of your car in the first place ie rims, ground FX etc. Maybe the would think that their fart-sounding muffler would be enough to dust a "Stock" Civic.

I say a sleeper can have rims. I'd say the bigger the rims, the more likely you would be constrewed as an just because of popular culture influences people to go out an buy 20's cuz they're "pimp azz."

I think a stock body get shows people that your trust the OEM to make a good automobile. I think this would alter the perception of someone that pullled up to you at the line. It's like ford vs. Chevy...the have company loyalty and people that have that consumer loyalty luv to make examples out of people with different cars.

I think that if you wanted to go sleeper, the OEM body kit would definetly compliment it. About the rims...OEM would definetly make someine less suspicious....but damn, if I'm gonna spend that much money, I'm going to get at least some cool 17's, but I wuz entertaining the idea of the SI rims.....

I was thinking the same thing about the OEM kit...but I want to wait until I do a turbo upgrade....I just want to find a good kit. I think a body kit will provoke VW's, subaru's and other sport compacts to try and make an example out of you.

I want to see a couple of our turbo members duke it out to see what's the best one before I do the upgrade....

Can't wait to surprise the hell outta people!

IMO, I think the OEM body kit +16"s (better acceleration) + a drop make a great lookin' sleeper. I'm going for that look too, check out the ride.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a "sleeper" a car that LOOKS stock, but isn't on the inside (engine)? Thats the whole thing...you pull up next to someone and they think you have a stock car, but then you dust them. That is what a sleeper is. NO APPEARANCE/EXTERIOR MODS!

if you want a true sleeper, this is what you gotta do.....

don't do anything to the outside... which means... LEAVE THE ULEV STICKER ALONE !!!!!

stock wheels, stock tires, stock suspension, couple bullet holes now and then, make some speed holes with a hammer or a pick axe (ie homer simpson), then do whatever you want with the engine... maybe a k20 swap... or drop a nice diesel turbo truck motor in there.. i dunno... point it.. make it fast...

You can but you'll also need about $550 for EACH rim.

That's just it. Some people have different opinions about it... some people don't care about a change of rims while some do. I'm just looking for people's opinion.

It is a matter of perception.... you guys act like you get the definition of a sleeper from webster or something.

Basically, if the looks of you car tells people that it probably doesn't have alot of performance mods.

Here's websters Definition : someone or something unpromising or unnoticed that suddenly attains prominence or value <the low-budget film became the summer's sleeper>

So if you are unnoticed as a fast car, that's what matters.....

It's perception....clear headlights don't peg you as a racer unless someone thinks so....

I do want my car to be a sleeper eventually....

Personally, I'd like to have an OEM kit on my car, or at least a little bling to tha zing, just so that it keeps people guessing...you know, just enough that people can be like, "no, couldn't be...oh I gotta find out for myself tho!"

That's why I'm not painting my side moldings or anything that came stock with the DX...any hardcore enthusiast would think he could eat my DX alive...till I start rollin...

But that's only a fantasy for now

*Enough to keep them guessing* is what I like... kinda like that video with the Vette Vs. the AWD Talon. The people in the Talon thought the guy in the Chevy was scared. That Vette was f***in fast. After that, I started liking Corvettes.

Good reply SilverSactoCiv. You should come down to our Bay Area meets some time.

I still don't understand the point of this. What do you mean going around telling everyone that my car is a sleeper? What's it matter to anyone on this site or to the world? My car isn't something "popular" enough for people to care that much about and I don't want them to. If the entire site knew that my car was a sleeper, who else are they gonna wanna tell?
