anyone have a bad gas guage?

So after having my car for three-four weeks and seeing the gas guage fluctuate way more than it should i decide to take it in to see if it really is broken. I figured it was my overactive imagination in thinking that hte gas gauge would be bad on a brand new car and i know things fail, but i guess it wold have been one of the systems that was thoroughly checked. So they tell me that they have to order a part that is on extreme back order, so i get to wait at least a week if not two for this part to come in. It's the fuel sender unit, whatever that is. It's just kind of wierd.

anyone else have this issue?

why do you think it's on "extreme backorder?"

Lots of people have problems with their gas gauge. Mine will show a 1/4 tank when there is nothing but fumes in the tank. It only happens every now and again though.

its not broken. it says in your manual that the gas gauge may fluctuate if your driving on roads that have constant changes in elevation and/or ones that have a lot of twists and turns...but if your driving in a straight line all the time, it should be okay...

I think all cars do that. Whenever I fill up the gas gauge doesn't start moving until i drive for about 100 miles. Then all of a sudden the needle will start dropping.

Generally I just use the odometer...... fill the tank up - run about 300 miles and find myself another gas station and do it all over again However my gas gauge is USUALLY pretty good - it does tend to say full til 100 miles in like most other people tend to see..... I think it's just designed that way for whatever reason.

Well i know most cars show less gas when they are first started. Mine sometimes will put the gas light on when i first start the car, but then when i drive it goes off. It is really hard to get a gas guage very accurate because of the elevation, bumps in the road, etc. unless u have a digital gas reader then it won't be that accurate.

Dude, it's just like in the Honda commercial! The dude doesn't want gas money from his friend becasuse the needle is just under full, then he reluctantly accepts the money. They were advertising this feature!!!

Mine does this too....it sticks up at full and then flies down to the middle after about 150 or so ......then flies down thereafter..... I just thought they leave it this way so when you buy the car you think it's gets hella good mileage.....

Wow. Too many rice boys on this damn forum.

Anyway. These aren't "problems". This behavior is normal for most cars. Especially if you drive hard. (which i'm sure most of you ricers do)

I'm with you. Just drive about 300 - 350 miles and fill your tank. Every car I've ever owned had the same problem. It's NORMAL. Deal with it, it's not like your car is going to blow up!

Filling up every 300 to 350 miles is a good trick, something I've been doing since my low gas light never comes on. Taking it in to get it checked out. Damn the light not working.

Manufacturers purposely design the gauge to stay on full for the first 75-100 miles. This is a fairly well known fact, I thought. The gauge also goes down slowly for the top half of the tank. Then, goes down to empty fairly quickly. This helps to trick consumers into believing that they are getting better mileage than they actually are.

However, a gas gauge that moves from full to half a tank in literally a blink of an eye, has something wrong with it. A gas guage that shows a 1/4 tank when there is barely a drop in the tank has something wrong with it. All you people saying it's not perfect and the bumps, elevation, bs, bs, etc....a lot of people are having problems with their gauges and it is due to a design flaw or defect. I have owned 6 hondas with my wife's 2 included and have never seen these types of problems with past vehicles.

This isn't a normal problem. I have a 99 honda accord that tells the mileage perfectly. It never fluctuates and never makes me guess. That is why I was so surprised when my 02 civic started doing it. My gauge will work fine until it has about a quarter left. Then I'll park the car for an hour or so...maybe more...whatever... and when I get back and start the car, my fuel warning light is on! I think ima have to take it in....

For those of you who think this isn't a problem, it is. I wouldn't have a part on order to get installed, which also happens to be on back order if it wasn't a problem. They tested my guage out and found a flaw. And I drive on flat roads most of the time. The problems I am having with mine are what some of you are having with yours, you shut the car off and turn it back on and there is a 1/4 of a tank less, or the guage will show less on startup and then level out above that after a little bit of driving, on a flat road. My gauge obviously has an issue. My nissan never did this. It was at a level when i turned it off and still at the same level when i turned it on. It is some sort of defect. I love the car, but it's still a problem and as long as it gets fixed under warranty, which it will, then I am still a satisfied customer. I just wanted to see if anyone else is having the same sort of problems. If you are, take the car in and see what they say. They're going to replace the fuel sending unit on my car when the part comes in.

TopFuel will become famous soon enough
Man i hate our gas gauge. First i fill up to 13.5 gallons and then i've driven 150 miles and the needle is still pointed at FULL at the very top! By the time i usually hit 200 miles then it finally drops to 3/4 and then another 40 miles it drops to 1/2 and then i'm confused by then and i dont trust the needle at all. And i hate how you start up the car with 1/4 less of gas and all that. What is there we can actually do so we dont have to spend an extremem amount? is this all under warranty? just for a honda inspection is already 70$
