What needs to be done to fix oil burnoff?

Ok, this has nothing to do with Honda, so don't worry. My mom's Jetta has 14500 miles on it and it burned off 4 qt of oil in 3000 miles. Right now VW is stalling the repairs by saying to drive it another 1500 and check the oil level. This is after saying that this has happened in other Jettas before and they know the source. All they want to do is replace the piston rings, but my objection to this is that if the engine has been running with little or no oil, who knows what the cylinder walls look like. So I've been telling my parents to get on VW to replace the entire lower block, or swap the engine. Niether of which VW seems willing to do. But if the walls have been worn, it will continue to leak oil right? They're going to end up dumping the car (and losing the money in trade rather than deal with the busted engine headache) and going back to Japanese cars (either an Altima or Accord) but am I right that not only piston rings need to be changed to fix the problem? Wouldn't you be doing the same thing? Or am I crazy? With less than 15K on the car (and a 100 k engine warranty) they ought to just be replacing the car outright given the other problems there has been.
On this same subject... What is the law regarding lemons?

Well 14500miles should definately still be under full warranty.. In which case have the rip apart the block and replace parts as needed..or take the car to a toyota dealer and see what their dignosis is. and get it in writing.

The Lemon Laws are completley different throughout the states so you will need to look at your state's laws...

The new jetta's seem to suck. I work with a girl who went through 2 in one year. The first was 4cylinder 5ps and the other 1.8t with
a typtronic tranny that blew at 300miles. Needles to say she now drives a dodge truck.

If your losing oil that much oil, make them fix it. The real problem is if you have low oil pressure. Low to the point the check oil like dosen't come but low to point its not in factory specs. That means your valve train is going to have a lot of extra wear.
I would a least get them to replace the bearing if not the head aslo.
