Ford Focus question...
Anyway, I love my '02 Civic, but this thread isn't about me. Its about my aging grandparents. So please, I need honest opinions about the following car my grandparents are looking at:
They have had Ford Tarusus in the past, and went to the Ford dealer that have gone to in the past and looked at a Ford Focus, all the info I have is 'Its a 4 speed with a 2.0L 16V Zetech engine.' Now, keep in mind this is for my grandparents, they're not looking for the fastest car in the world. One reason they looked at the Focus was because it was low to the ground (for easy access and due to wheelchair).
They were happy with their Tarusus in the past and had them for a few years, but now that my grandfather doesn't drive anymore (and has been slowing down ), they're looking for something that will allow my grandmother (who I have always thought was an above-average for her age driver) to be able to drive around and have easy access to.
So yeah...

Honestly, I don't think its a bad car for seniors. My great-aunt has a Ford Focus, and it serves its purpose. It gets good gas mileage, its reliable (as reliable as a ford can be), and its fairly inexpensive. I don't know if I would buy a new one, because they lose their value quickly. I recently saw an ad for a 2001 Focus with $15,000 mile for a little under $8,000. But for its purpose its a pretty good car.

the doors on the focus are nice because they aren't too long or too high. at least in my opinion. You might want to look into other cars that might prove more reliable, like the sentra or MP5. My sister has one and has broken quite a bit. Look into what else is offered in that class. Personally i would rather have a hyundai sonata over a focus.

OK... I have driven the Mondeo. Essentially the Euro Version of the Contour, with the Zetec engine. It is quite a nice engine, and it will be similar to the Honda SOHC VTEC in the EX. Very quiet, nice running, and gas effecient. I don't know how much the US version of the engine differs, and I also don't know how reliable it is (it was only a rental), but it has some go in it.
About the wheel chair thing... Get a car with big doors. It will make getting easier. Coupes are usually helpful for this, but it depends how much your grandparents value the back seat. If not at all, a 2 door will be easier to get into because of the larger door, especially if they don't want to go to a full size sedan. From my grandparents experience, leather seats also help because you can slide in.

Ok, here is my suggestion: Have them look at the Mazda Protege or MP5. If they want American cars tell them it's owned by Ford. They are very reliable, get great gas mileage and are in the same class. Plus the MP5 has alot of cargo room for the wheelchair. Just MHO.

If it's for you grandparents, I would'nt recommend it. Those things have so many problems with them, they'll be fixing it more than driving it. You want something realiable that they won't have to worry about. Ford Focus = Not reliable Get em a Pacer.

Ergonomically, the Focus is a well designed car. It would be a good choice for someone who wasn't worried too much about their car. Not meaning the car isn't good, but its no big pimpin mobile. I think it would be good for a lil old lady. Maybe a gently used one would be better financially if its in good condition. I don't know what their financial situation, but if your grandma wants a car with a whole lot of power, suggest a Marauder. Otherwise, point her in the direction of a Focus, or maybe even a Civic. They're all in the same class more or less.
