HELP! I might have to give up my car! I need advice!
this is long, so only proceed if you have time and really care.
On the 4th of July I misshifted from 3rd to 2nd instead of 3rd to 4th and blew a valve. I was able to talk Honda into warranteeing the work even though they thought it was my fault. They did minimal repairs to the engine. I get the car back and 3 weeks later the same thing happens and I break two valves. The car is sitting at the Honda dealer now and they wont warrantee it again. They are asking 2,000+ to replace valves and piston heads etc.
heres my options and their downfalls:
-put a K20 in it - have to wait untill HASport comes w/ the kit
-tweek out the D17 - no aftermarket internals exist for the D17 yet
-do minimal repairs and sell the car - ill lose a lot of money
-sell it as is - i wont get what i owe on it even
-let it be repossessed - black marks
wtf should I do? does anybody else have any ideas?
Has anybody else experienced misshifting before? It seems to be very easy to do. does anybody know if it might be caused by a problem with my transmission? People have told me a few different things. The service rep at the Honda dealer insists that I "havent mastered stick yet". My uncle also told me that it can easily happen but I have also heard that there may be something wrong with the trans. any advice techs? I mean, I like to think that I know how to drive. If I knew that I was puting the car in 2nd instead of 4th, theres no way in heII I would have released the clutch. I pushed the stick straight down from 3rd like I always do and the stick flew into 2nd.
Its really scary. Is that really normal?

Dude, looks like your best bet is to tweek out the D17. Hey, on the bright side, you can still get a custom turbo, and you now have to opportunity to strengthen your bottom end to run more boost! The other options look like no-go's and nulls. Sorry dude. Sux.
After you accidently downshifted, did you drive like that when it was past the red line?
I know I've accidently done it a time or two but pushed the clutch right back in as soon as I realized what had happened. My car has gone way past the redline once, but the engine should be able to handle it if for a second or two. There's gotta be some way to pin it back on them and get them to pay for it.

Yes, it is not that hard to do.... just put it in the wrong slot and let the clutch out.
I have done this 2X in the past, Both times i caught it somewhere near redline.
Everyone makes mistakes......

it's not an experience issue, even the best of us do it, i've watched EXPERIENCED porsche road racers blow ALL their valves cause of a misshift, so don't take that bull from the dealer. i would go with tweaking the D17, cause the k20 is gonna cost a LOT more than 2 Gs. i think your ONLY option is to keep the car, just cause of cost issues. good luck flex.

first of all ur dealer is full of S H I T T T T ! !, unless u told them that u misshifted or something there is no way in the world they could have diagnostic it to find that being the reason. i would fight the warranty, for one, and then go for the k20, i personally want to turbo the engine that is in there now, but in ur case with bent valves and what not that may not be an issue

yeah i would just pay for new valves.......but ya gotta realize that they most likely won't pay for it. you don't want the car repo'd cuz then your credit is f**ked for years. and you don't want to lose any more money....shop around, tho. find someone who will maybe do it for cheap if you buy the parts....cuz 2gs is a lot of money....
personally i would tweak out the D17. youre right that there are no internals available yet, but you could probably call a company that makes internals and have them put together some custom internals for you for a few grand. but id say your least expensive alternative is to just have them put it back together the way it was for the 2G's and go about your business if your funds are tight.

i dont know what to tell u, ive done that once where i accidentally took the motor to 9k rpm. no dmg occured though, the car drives the same today as when i bought it (well today it just does it a little quicker) after that incident i got into the habit of the so called "granny shift" so i never make that mistake anymore.

I can honestly say that I have never misshifted to a lower gear while doing a 0-60 run. I have no idea how one does this. I do mis the 2-3 shift sometime but just because I release the clutch to quick. If you don't have any money, meaning that you are going to use your credit cards, I would go with the least expensive option. Least expensive is your only choice. Even if all the internal parts were available, you would be paying off that card for the next ten years.
Get a good lawyer and fight it. I mean, even a newbie stick driver doesn't blow piston valves like that... and TWICE? Something wrong with the engine. But i hope you did break the engine in well when it was new. Grannying the engine when it's new isn't all that great either since your valves never experience high rpms so they'll seat lower after they're broken into. But that is a whole different story. Grab a good lawyer and fight it.
CALL A JUNK YARD!!!. THERE ARE PLENTY OF JUNK YARDS! most have a "nationwide parts locator" program on their in house computers. ask your locall junk yard to put it up and see who replies. ive gotten many for a tranny, but all the replies that come in are from CA, and i live in CT. parts are cheap. shipping is more. your only concern should be the labor. find a friend, or a good shop. ive gotten qoutes on a tranny from detroit for $830 with shipping. a retail on a new one is over 2 grand. good luck.... as im in a similar situation, i feel your pain.

It doesn't matter if the rev-limiter cuts in. All it does is cut the fuel. If you are going 80mph and drop that baby into 2nd and the clutch is engaged, the wheels are going to spin @80mph and so is the engine.
i also misshifted twice. but the first time i wasn't redlining, so it was really a downshift the 2nd time i was redlining and i saw the needle touch the end of the tach
i was really scared, but she ran fine, no harshness or anything.

I'd do as others have said, get a lawyer. Call Honda of America and tell them what happened and then tell them you were only at like 5k and it happened. The thing is you shouldn't just lay down and take it. Fight it.
i would defnately take to another dealership, or contact honda. a salesman where i bought my car told me about some rich little kid that bought an accord v6. he went out got f*ucked up and started drivin. he must have been speeding and a cop attempted to pull him over, he didnt. he took off and ended up in a parking lot , where he continued to drove in circles while redlining the car. obviously the motor blew (or the clutch i dont remember) . and after a fight from his parents, honda warrantied everything. hope this will help you out.

for those of you that misshifted and are saying that your car is running fine, GET IT CHECKED OUT!! you can bend a valve even slightly and you won't be able to tell a difference in the way it runs, only a dianostic can tell, so you may be running on a bent valve and that will really screw things up for you. as i said before ANYONE, even the most experienced drivers, can miss a shift. the only thing you can do for it is get over your mistake and get things fixed.
damn that sux man. If you mis-shifted a 5 speed I highly reccomend staying AWAY from the K20A2- I blew my motor in the RSX doing a 3rd to 2nd at 8200rpm and fried 2 valves and 2 cylinders. $8900 worth of damage- covered under warrenty once, which is why im selling the car- I dont want it to happen again, Ive never mis-shifted before and I think im just used to the 5 spd gearbox. Id go with either fixing your stock motor, or fix it and sell the car...either way it will set you back some money...either that or write to Honda begging for them to repair it under Goodwill- they do do it sometimes.
Good luck.
Good luck.
